The Lufthansa Group is wasting no time in onboarding its newest airline member, ITA Airways — the Italian flag carrier.

Today’s update means ITA Airways flights credited to any of the Lufthansa Group airlines will earn elite status points.

“This gives our frequent flyers more opportunities to achieve or maintain their status—and thus enjoy exclusive benefits,” said Caroline Drischel, senior vice president of customer journey at Lufthansa Group.

Additionally, but only for a limited time, Miles & More members entering their frequent flyer numbers into ITA bookings can earn up to 6,000 bonus miles.

How To Earn Lufthansa Miles & More Elite Status When Flying ITA Airways

A month after ITA Airways officially joined the Lufthansa Group, members of the Miles & More program can now earn points towards their elite status when flying ITA Airways.

To earn your Miles & More elite status when flying ITA, simply add your frequent flyer number thanks to the addition of Miles & More in the drop-down menu.

The number of Points, Qualifying Points, and HON Circle Points earned when flying ITA will be the same as when flying other Lufthansa Group airlines and co-issuing Miles & More partners.

Miles & More is the only frequent flyer program to appear in this list. As the merger of ITA in the Lufthansa Group progresses, we’d expect frequent flyers from other Star Alliance member airlines, including United, to also be able to earn status points when flying ITA.

Hot Tip:

Even if you’re based in the U.S., there are still a bunch of great ways to redeem miles in the Lufthansa Group’s Miles & More program.

Do SkyTeam Frequent Flyers Still Earn Status Points When Flying ITA Airways?

By joining the Lufthansa Group, a founding member of Star Alliance, ITA Airways had to leave the SkyTeam alliance.

With that, all perks and benefits as well as miles and status earning associated with SkyTeam member airlines will eventually end.

However, as it stands, passengers booking flights with ITA Airways can still add frequent flyer numbers of most SkyTeam member airlines.

While there is still no official word to confirm this, it would suggest that frequent flyers of some SkyTeam member airlines (including Delta) can still earn miles and status points when flying ITA Airways.

Earn Bonus Miles When Flying ITA Airways

For a limited time only, from March 1 to April 15, 2025, Miles & More members can earn up to 6,000 bonus miles when flying ITA Airways.

Flying 2 continental flights (within Europe) will unlock 2,000 bonus miles, while 2 international flights (between the U.S. and Europe, for example) will earn an additional 4,000 miles.

Although 6,000 miles aren’t enough to warrant booking flights with ITA solely for the bonus, it’s a nice bonus to have if you’re already flying with ITA.

To qualify for the bonus miles, you must register before March 31.

Final Thoughts

Miles & More members will be happy to learn that they’ll now be able to earn points towards their status when flying ITA Airways.

During this interim phase, it appears SkyTeam members who booked ITA flights before the airline joined the Lufthansa Group are still eligible to earn their reciprocal status points when flying ITA.

Lastly, be sure to register for the 6,000 bonus miles if you intend to fly ITA between March 1 and April 15, 2025.
