It’s a big day for air travelers in Los Angeles.

As of 5 p.m. PDT on June 6, a brand-new dedicated LAX Metro station will open its doors to the public, vastly improving transit links to and from the airport. To celebrate, Metro is treating passengers to free system-wide travel until 3 a.m. on Monday, June 9.

Let’s take a look at what this means for your next journey to or from LAX.

Taking Public Transit to LAX Just Got Easier

Getting to or from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) — the second busiest airport in the U.S. — can be a frustrating experience, especially with LA’s notoriously congested freeways.

Taking public transit to the airport in Los Angeles has always been an option, but with the nearest Metro station located offsite, travelers often had to rely on private cars or rideshares to complete their journey, making transit less convenient

As of today, passengers arriving and departing from LAX can take both C and K Metro trains to and from the new LAX/Metro Transit Center. From there, a free shuttle service will take passengers the final stretch between the station and the airport’s terminals.

The Transit Center will also be served by Metro Bus Lines 102, 111, 117, 120, 232, and other bus services, including the Big Blue Bus (Route 3).

For a limited time only, travel will be free across the entire Metro network through June 9 at 3 a.m. PDT.

The hope is that this new, fully accessible station will incentivize more LAX travelers to use public transport when traveling to or from the airport. TAP (Transit Access Pass) cards, which you can also add to your iPhone’s Apple Wallet, will be available for purchase at the new station.

Beginning in 2026, Los Angeles residents and visitors will be able to ride public transit directly to the new LAX/Metro Transit Center. From there, an automated people mover will transport them directly to the airport terminals — making the entire trip seamless.

Hot Tip:

Once you’ve arrived at LAX, there are plenty of airport lounges to choose from. Here are some tips on how to access lounges without the need to fly in business or first class.

Final Thoughts

Many U.S. airports could learn from LAX’s example. Better transit connections help reduce CO₂ emissions from air travel. Still, only time will tell if LAX’s new Metro station truly boosts the number of passengers choosing public transit to reach the airport.

With public transit now more efficient and an automated people mover coming next year to take travelers straight to the terminals, trips to LAX will be much easier.
