How To Apply for an American Express Credit Card

To apply for an American Express card, you must be at least 18 years old, have a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and have a source of income.

When applying for an American Express credit card, you must provide details like your name, date of birth, Social Security number, annual income, and mailing address.

What Credit Score Do You Need To Get an American Express Credit Card?

No credit score guarantees approval for any American Express credit card. Your credit score isn’t the only factor American Express considers, as your income, the amount of credit extended to you, and your history with American Express can all play a part in their decision.

That said, most applications with a good to excellent credit score usually have strong odds of approval for the full suite of American Express credit cards.

How Many American Express Cards Can You Have?

Usually, American Express limits customers to 5 credit cards, though your experience may vary. However, cards without a preset spending limit, like the Amex Platinum card, may not count toward the 5-credit-card limit.

Can You Combine Points on American Express Cards?

That depends on the type of cards you have. If your cards share the same rewards program, then yes.

If you have 2 cards that earn Amex Membership Rewards points, you can combine those rewards. If you have 1 card that earns Delta SkyMiles and another that earns Marriott points, those rewards cannot be combined.

How We Selected the Best Amex Credit Cards

At Upgraded Points, we evaluate Amex credit cards based on the value they offer travelers. We assess each card on essential factors, including its benefits, earnings structure, welcome offers, redemption value, rewards program, fees, and more.

How To Strengthen Your Approval Chances

There are a few ways to maximize your approval odds with Amex, including:

• Use the Apply with Confidence tool on the American Express website to find out if you’ll be approved and see what welcome offer you’d receive, all without impacting your credit score.
• Check your credit score, as it might have improved since you last checked.
• Always pay your credit card bill on time. This is the most significant factor, accounting for 35% of your overall credit score. (Source: Experian)
• Keep your credit utilization low by paying down existing balances. A good credit utilization ratio is generally considered to be below 30%. (Source: Consumer Financial Protection Bureau)
• Limit how frequently you open new cards. Multiple new accounts in a short timeframe can indicate a higher risk profile. (Source: MyFico)

Final Thoughts

When it comes to American Express cards, the Amex Platinum card is the best pick for premium perks and airport lounge access; the Amex Gold card is the best for dining and groceries; and the Amex Business Platinum card is the best for frequent business travelers.

To decide which American Express credit card is right for you, make sure to consider what type of rewards you want to earn, what benefits and protections you want the card to offer, whether you are comfortable paying an annual fee for certain perks, and remember to review our comparison table and top-choice selections above.
