We’re firm believers in the value proposition of the American Express® Gold Card. Over the years, the list of benefits has evolved, but in 2021, American Express announced that the $100 annual airline fee credit would be discontinued.

Replacing it would be an Uber Cash benefit, presumably piggybacking off of the success from The Platinum Card® from American Express’ Uber Cash benefit.

On an absolute basis, the Amex Gold card boosted its value proposition significantly (offering up to $120 in annual Uber Cash and removing a hard-to-use $100 airline fee credit).

So in this guide, we’ll show you the A to Z of the Amex Gold card’s Uber Cash benefit, including how to maximize it!

Card Snapshot

Let’s start off with an overview of the Amex Gold card. As you’ll find out, this card is one of our favorite pieces of metal that you should be keeping in your wallet for everyday purchases, especially if you spend money on food.

American Express Membership Rewards

The Amex Gold card’s fantastic value proposition starts from day 1, thanks to a generous welcome bonus offer. Then, expect to earn up to 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent:

  • 4x points at restaurants, including takeout and delivery in the U.S. (up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1x)
  • 4x points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 per calendar year, then 1x)
  • 3x points on airfare booked directly through the airline or through AmexTravel.com
  • 1x points on all other purchases

We consider American Express Membership Rewards points to be worth 2.2 cents each, which makes earning 4 points per dollar equivalent to a return on spending of 8.8%. Similarly, earning 3 points per dollar translates to a 6.6% return on spending.

And of course, the other benefits this card offers are also very appealing, including:

  • Up to $120 in annual dining credits, which is good at Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, and Five Guys (up to $10 per month)
  • Up to $120 in annual Uber Cash (the focus of this guide), which is good for rides and Uber Eats orders in the U.S. (up to $10 per month)
  • Up to $100 in annual Resy credits, redeemable at any U.S. Resy restaurant and other eligible Resy purchases (distributed as $50 semi-annually)
  • Up to $84 in annual Dunkin’ credits, redeemable at Dunkin’ locations (distributed as $7 per month)

Note that enrollment is required for some benefits, so make sure you’re enrolled to get the most out of your card’s benefits.

But one other notable feature of the Amex Gold card is that you can book hotel stays at The Hotel Collection, which confers a property credit of up to $100 and a room upgrade (subject to availability) when you book eligible stays of 2 nights or longer.

Also, expect to enjoy no preset spending limit*, making it easier to get large purchases approved.

To finalize the card details, the Amex Gold card comes with purchase protection, extended warranty, no foreign transaction fees, and up to 5 authorized user cards for no additional annual fee ($35 annual fee per card after that; rates & fees).

Hot Tip: Check to see if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of up to 90,000 points with the Amex Gold card. The current public offer is 60,000 points + up to $100 back. (This targeted offer was independently researched and may not be available to all applicants.)

Amex Gold Card $10 Uber Credit

The Amex Gold card’s comes with a complimentary benefit that provides cardholders with up to $10 every month in Uber Cash.

Uber Cash is a currency used in the Uber and Uber Eats apps that is identical to the dollar, but it’s stored in your Uber Wallet.

At any point in time, you can also purchase Uber Cash or use a combination of Uber Cash and a credit card to pay for a ride or an Uber Eats order.

Currently, the $10 Uber Cash covers rides and Uber Eats orders in the U.S. only. So if you’re in Mexico and want to call an Uber, just remember that you won’t be able to use the Uber Cash in your wallet to pay for that ride.

How Do You Use the Amex Gold Card $10 Uber Credit?

In general, it’s very straightforward to use the Amex Gold card’s $10 Uber Cash.

Step 1 Add Your Amex Gold Card To Your Uber Wallet

The first step is to add the Amex Gold card to your Uber wallet, much like adding a payment method to your Amazon account.

First, open your Uber app and click the profile icon in the top-right corner. From there, click the button that says Wallet.

Then, scroll down to the Payment Methods section. Click the button that says Add Payment Method or Redeem Gift Card.

Step 2 Receive $10 Uber Case Credit Each Month

Once your Amex Gold card is added, you can see your Uber Cash getting deposited into your Uber Wallet every month. In some cases, the credit deposits on the first of every month, and in other cases, the credit deposits on the last day of the previous month.

So for example, your Amex Gold card’s $10 Uber Cash for June 2023 may be deposited into your account on June 1, 2023, or May 31, 2023.

Step 3 Use Your Amex Gold Card Uber Credit

Uber is almost everywhere in the U.S., thanks to its status as the largest ride-hailing company. So, if you’re looking to take an Uber home after a night out, just use your Uber Cash in your Uber Wallet to pay for the ride, and you’re good to go.

If you rarely use rideshares, the best way to use the credit is for Uber Eats orders. Remember, only rides and Uber Eats orders in the U.S. count towards the Uber Cash, which means you’ll need to keep it to domestic activity.

Remember, Uber Eats does both pick-up and delivery, which makes it easy to enjoy a discounted meal with a $10 Uber Cash credit every month. No need to pay expensive delivery fees!

What Transactions Don’t Qualify For The Uber Case Credit?

If you pay for your Uber ride or Uber Eats order using your Amex Gold card instead of using the Uber Cash that’s in your Uber Wallet, you won’t qualify for the $10 Uber Cash.

Similarly, other rideshare apps like Grubhub, DoorDash, Postmates, or Caviar won’t qualify for Uber Cash.

So just be absolutely sure that you’re only adding the Amex Gold card as a payment method to get Uber Cash deposited into your wallet.

But, if you happen to use your Amex Gold card for your Uber Eats order in the U.S., you can rest assured that you’ll earn 4x points, too.

Just be sure to use it before you lose it, as it’s not possible to indefinitely accumulate Uber Cash without using any Uber Cash.

Hot Tip: Authorized users will not be entitled to their own $10 Uber Cash benefit each month. They can certainly add the Amex Gold card as a payment method to earn bonus points, but there’s only 1 monthly Uber Cash credit available and that goes to the primary cardholder.

Is The Amex Gold Card Uber Credit Worth It?

The Amex Gold card’s $10 Uber Cash benefit is absolutely worth it.

This is yet another easy way to get tremendous value from your Amex Gold card. Being able to enjoy a discounted meal or free ride with $10 in Uber Cash every month is a fabulous benefit that most of us will be able to utilize.

With up to $120 per year in value from this benefit alone, holding the Amex Gold card isn’t even a question in our minds.

And that’s not even taking into account the industry-leading rewards on restaurants and groceries.

Final Thoughts

The Amex Gold card offers a benefit of $10 Uber Cash every month. Annually, that’s equal to a maximum benefit amount of $120.

Between the 2 major card benefits of Uber Cash and the dining credit, the Amex Gold card pretty much pays for itself.

Even better, if you spend any amount of money on restaurants, groceries, and airfare, you can be confident that you’re getting top-notch bang for your buck on rewards.

Just note that in order to access the Uber Cash, you need to add the Amex Gold card to your Uber Wallet into which the Uber Cash will be deposited.

*No Preset Spending Limit means your spending limit is flexible. Unlike a traditional card with a set limit, the amount you can spend adapts based on factors such as your purchase, payment, and credit history.

For the purchase protection and extended warranty benefits of the American Express® Gold Card, eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Terms, conditions and limitations apply. Visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for more details. Underwritten by AMEX Assurance Company.
