If you regularly use Lyft, getting around Europe just got a little easier.

Lyft is rolling out its app across Europe, allowing U.S. travelers to request rides using the same Lyft app, account, and payment methods they already use at home. The rollout starts today in Barcelona and Hamburg, with major European cities joining during October.

Here’s what travelers need to know.

Your Lyft App Now Works in Europe

The nice thing about this is how simple it is: You don’t need to download another rideshare app or create a new account when you land in Europe. Lyft says riders can use their existing account and saved payment methods to book rides through the Lyft app.

By the end of October, the service will be available in cities across Spain, Italy, Greece, Poland, England, Scotland, Ireland, Austria, France, and Germany.

Lyft isn’t starting from scratch in Europe. Instead, the Lyft app will connect travelers with drivers from existing local ride-sharing networks.

As a traveler, you don’t really need to worry about how it works behind the scenes. You can simply open the Lyft app as you would at home and request a ride from a nearby driver. European riders can also continue using the Freenow by Lyft and Gett by Lyft apps as usual.

Lyft’s main U.S. rival, Uber, already works in Europe.

Paying for Lyft Rides — and Earning Rewards

You won’t need to set up a new payment method before using Lyft in Europe. The credit cards already saved to your Lyft account will work, so you can keep paying with the same card you use for Lyft rides at home.

For now, rides will be charged in the local currency. Lyft says that sometime in the next year, riders will be able to choose whether they want to pay in their home currency, such as U.S. dollars, or the local currency, such as euros.

There is one question for points-and-miles travelers that Lyft hasn’t answered yet. Lyft has partnerships with programs such as United MileagePlus, which allows members to earn miles on eligible Lyft rides, but it’s not yet clear whether those benefits will apply to rides in Europe.

The same goes for other U.S.-based Lyft perks and credit card benefits. We’ll be watching to see which benefits carry over as Lyft expands across Europe.

This is great news for U.S. travelers heading across the Atlantic. Instead of landing in Europe and immediately figuring out which local transportation app to download, you may now be able to open the same Lyft app you already use at home and request a ride.

Barcelona and Hamburg are first, but with London, Paris, Rome, Athens, Berlin, and more coming throughout October, Lyft will now become a more useful app to keep on your phone when traveling internationally.
