This morning, Marriott announced it would acquire the boutique citizenM hotel chain in an exciting $355 million deal.

Let’s take a look at the details and what to know about the citizenM hotel chain.

CitizenM To Join Marriott Bonvoy

On April 28, 2025, Marriott announced that it would acquire the citizenM hotel brand.

The brand will join the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program, but it is unclear when this will happen or what benefits will be available to elite members.

“We are thrilled to add citizenM as a unique, differentiated offering to our select-service brand portfolio as we continue to strengthen Marriott’s foothold in this valuable market segment around the world,” said Marriott president and CEO Anthony Capuano.

If this is the first time you’re hearing about citizenM, it’s a global hotel chain with over 30 hotels open in more than 20 cities worldwide. Its hotels are typically located in bustling city centers, such as New York’s Times Square, Washington, D.C.’s NoMa, and Paris’ Champs-Élysées.

Bottom Line:

The company opened its first hotel at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) in 2008. The brand seeks to “disrupt” the hotel industry by offering luxury options at an affordable price point. It continues to grow, which makes it enticing for Marriott. The brand has 3 new hotels comprising more than 600 rooms slated to open by mid-2026.

Why This Move Makes Sense for Marriott

Marriott says the acquisition of citizenM will boost its global expansion of “select-service and lifestyle lodging offerings,” where the brand is firmly established. CitizenM is tech-first and known for focusing on art, design, and common spaces where guests can work and play.

I wrote about citizenM late last year and mentioned that its loyalty program, myCitizenM+, has become one of my favorite rewards programs. MyCitizenM+ is not like a major rewards program in that you will not earn points, elite nights, or have to meet minimum spending requirements. Instead, you’ll pay $120, £90, or €100 per year, depending on location, to join.

Marriott’s announcement didn’t mention the myCitizenM+ program. However, Marriott can truly shine if it takes advantage of the program. MyCitizenM+ offers the ability to use its coworking spaces even if you aren’t staying at the hotel. You’ll also receive discounts on room rates, food and drinks, and more.

Hot Tip:

Current myCitizenM+ members can request a free status match from any current airline or hotel elite status to myCitizenM+ here. When matched, you’ll receive 12 months of membership to take advantage of benefits that include discounts of 15% off of rooms, food, and drink (excluding breakfast), late checkout, rooms with upgraded views, and more.

Marriott is acquiring the citizenM hotel brand. This is really exciting news, as Marriott picks up another brand that strikes a balance between affordability and quality. We look forward to learning more details about this acquisition!
