Until now, booking a Marriott corporate rate was usually as simple as entering a code. That’s changing.

Some guests now have to verify their employment with a work email before they can book certain negotiated rates. That moves an eligibility check that used to happen at the front desk (if it happened at all) to the booking screen.

For eligible travelers, the extra step should be a minor hurdle. But the system isn’t perfect, and some guests who should qualify could get left out by the new setup.

What’s Changed With Marriott Corporate Rates?

A Marriott guest posted on Reddit’s r/marriott forum that they tried to select an EY Global Partner Rate and hit a new screen. It read “Corporate Verified Rate,” followed by “This rate is only available to eligible employees” and a prompt to verify employment.

Another Reddit forum includes reports that guests have also seen the check on Marriott’s website.

The rules themselves aren’t new. Marriott‘s corporate rate guidance already says these rates are for employees of the qualifying company, don’t extend to family members, and require ID or proof of eligibility at check-in. Hotels can also alter bookings for a guest who isn’t authorized to use the rate, changing to the hotel’s standard rate.

What’s new is the timing. Rather than relying on a front desk agent to ask for a business card, Marriott appears to be matching the email address to the specific company tied to the rate. A Reddit user found that verifying a university email only unlocked that university’s discount, not an unrelated company’s rate.

It’s not clear yet whether this is a brand-wide rollout or limited to certain corporate accounts. Marriott already uses a similar verify-once approach for its Explore by Marriott Bonvoy employee rate, and Avis began requiring a corporate email to search for corporate discounts a few years ago.

How This Affects Travelers (and How To Prepare)

For hotel brands, this makes sense. A company negotiates a lower rate by delivering a certain volume of business, and the hotel doesn’t want that discount spreading to everyone with an internet connection. Checking before booking could also help eligible guests avoid surprises at check-in.

The catch is that an email address and eligibility don’t always line up:

  • Contractors: Some qualify for a company’s rate but don’t have a company email address.
  • Employees at subsidiaries: Their email domain may differ from the company that negotiated the rate.
  • Personal trips: Having a work email doesn’t mean the rate can be used for personal travel. Some agreements cover business travel only.
  • Company booking tools: A reservation may be linked to an email address the traveler can’t access directly.

If you’re legitimately entitled to a corporate rate, here’s how to avoid headaches:

  • Verify early: Complete the email verification well before your trip so there’s time to sort out problems.
  • Ask your travel manager: Contractors and subsidiary employees should confirm whether they’re covered and how the company wants them to book. That may mean using a corporate booking tool rather than booking directly with Marriott.
  • Bring proof anyway: Verifying at booking doesn’t replace Marriott’s check-in requirement, so carry an employee ID or other proof of eligibility.
  • Read the rate rules: Confirm whether your company’s rate covers personal travel before using it on vacation.
  • Compare the member rate: Marriott Bonvoy membership is free, and anyone can book member rates. Check both prices before you book.

Final Thoughts

Marriott checking eligibility before booking is a fair move, and it beats a late-night standoff at the front desk when you arrive after a long travel day. The problem is the gaps in the policy.

If you’re a contractor, work for a subsidiary, or book through a company tool, confirm with your employer how you’re covered and how to access the discount before your next Marriott stay.
