A completely reimagined Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) opened its doors today. Pittsburgh residents, along with travelers visiting the Steel City, will now be greeted by a brand-new terminal designed to make the journey smoother from the moment you walk in.

The modern facility offers faster security, quicker baggage delivery, improved parking, and numerous unique touches designed with locals in mind.

Here’s what travelers need to know about PIT’s brand-new terminal.

What’s New Inside PIT’s Completely Redesigned Terminal?

After more than a decade of planning, 4 years of construction, and a $1.7 billion investment, Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is ready to showcase its shiny, new terminal. The new terminal replaces the outdated former terminal and is designed to accommodate up to 15 airlines, featuring a streamlined layout.

Passengers will notice immediate upgrades, including:

  • 1 consolidated security checkpoint with 12 TSA lanes and automated bin return.
  • Baggage delivery times cut in half thanks to a modernized system.
  • An international arrivals facility replacing the old temporary setup.
  • 3,300-space parking garage with triple the covered parking and real-time space indicators.
  • 4 outdoor terraces, a rarity among U.S. airports.
  • A new Welcome Point for greeting arriving passengers.
  • 20 new or refreshed concessions, from Mineo’s Pizza and Café Conmigo to Shake Shack and Jimmy John’s.

The first flights through the terminal operated early this morning, including a United arrival from San Francisco (SFO) at 5:15 a.m. and a Southwest departure to Denver (DEN) just 15 minutes later.

Overall, the terminal generated $2.5 billion in economic impact and created more than 14,000 jobs, with 90% of labor and materials sourced locally — including 16,000 tons of steel produced in Pittsburgh.

Architecturally, the design features warm materials, abundant natural light, nods to Western Pennsylvania’s hills and forests, and a new Skybridge inspired by the dramatic reveal when exiting the Fort Pitt Tunnel.

Hot Tip:

With twice as many TSA lanes, faster baggage delivery, better parking, upgraded arrivals, and an entirely refreshed airside experience, winter travelers should expect noticeably shorter lines and smoother flow through the new terminal — especially during peak holiday weeks.

Final Thoughts

PIT’s new terminal represents a significant update to the airport’s overall passenger experience, providing improvements in security, baggage handling, parking, and amenities that travelers will notice immediately. As the newly minted terminal enters full operation, it should provide a smoother and more efficient experience for anyone flying to or from Pittsburgh.
