Qatar Airways has officially completed the installation of Starlink satellite Wi-Fi on 54 of its Boeing 777 aircraft, becoming the world’s first airline to fully equip and operate more than 50 widebody jets with the service.

The move makes Qatar Airways the largest operator of Starlink-equipped widebody aircraft—and the only airline in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region offering this level of connectivity.

Here’s what you should know.

Complimentary Wi-Fi in the sky is still rare, especially when flying economy. When Wi-Fi is available, it can be slow. Qatar Airways is changing that narrative with the fastest in-flight Wi-Fi in the sky, powered by SpaceX’s Starlink satellite constellation.

Its first plane equipped with Starlink, a 777-300, flew on October 22 between Doha (DOH) and London Heathrow (LHR). Since then, the airline has operated more than 15,000 Starlink-connected flights.

Passengers in Economy and Premium cabins now enjoy free, gate-to-gate Wi-Fi with speeds of up to 500 Mbps per aircraft—fast enough to stream, game, or work with ease. The airline promises performance comparable to or better than what travelers experience at home.

And best of all, Starlink’s fast, satellite-based service will be free for all passengers.

Boeing 777s Complete, Airbus A350s Next

Originally scheduled as a 2-year program, Qatar Airways completed its Starlink rollout on Boeing 777s in just 9 months — nearly 50% ahead of schedule.

With its entire 777 fleet now equipped, Qatar is turning its attention to the Airbus A350, with installation already underway and expected to finish within the next year. Once complete, even more of Qatar’s long-haul and ultra-long-haul routes will feature the high-speed, free Wi-Fi service.

The airline has not said whether it plans to install Starlink on the rest of its fleet, which includes Boeing 787s and several Airbus models: the A380, A320 series, and A330.

That said, the Middle East is home to 3 of the world’s biggest airlines. Qatar Airways’ introduction of fast, complimentary Wi-Fi for all passengers could go a long way toward differentiating the airline from its biggest local competitors, Emirates and Etihad.

Other airlines worldwide, such as Latvia-based AirBaltic, Air New Zealand, Hawaiian Airlines, JSX, and Japan’s ZIPAIR, use Starlink Wi-Fi, but Qatar is now the largest carrier to host the service.

Final Thoughts

Qatar Airways has delivered on its promise — completing the Starlink Wi-Fi rollout across its entire Boeing 777 fleet faster than expected. As the focus shifts to outfitting the Airbus A350 next, more passengers than ever can expect high-speed, gate-to-gate Wi-Fi on their next long-haul flight with Qatar Airways.

Starlink is known for offering the fastest speeds, so we’re excited to try it out for ourselves very soon.
