The Robinhood Gold Card is best known for offering 3% cash-back with no annual fee, though it requires a paid Robinhood Gold membership. But its virtual card controls may be its most distinctive feature.

It’s not the only card to offer virtual credit card numbers, but the Robinhood Gold card goes further by letting you create multiple virtual card numbers, set per-card limits, schedule automatic cancellation, and even generate cards specifically for AI agents.

Here’s what makes Robinhood’s virtual cards different, along with a few practical ways to use them.

Why Robinhood’s Virtual Cards Stand Out

Some credit card issuers, including American Express, Capital One, and Citi, allow cardholders to create virtual cards. Those virtual cards have unique numbers tied to the credit card account, but protect the actual card number. This feature is useful for privacy, especially if you’re concerned about data breaches.

Though these issuers offer virtual cards, the controls are more limited. Depending on the card, you may not be able to name individual cards, set spending limits, schedule cancellations, or view spending history for each card. That’s where Robinhood’s virtual cards stand out.

Robinhood Gold card’s virtual cards are more customizable, allowing cardholders to set per-transaction limits or overall monthly limits, schedule cancellations, and view spending separately for each card. You can create up to 5 new virtual cards per day with the Robinhood Gold card, and there’s no limit on how many can be active at a time.

Here’s how Robinhood virtual cards compare to those of other credit card issuers:

Key Limitations

Robinhood

Robinhood offers free trial, single use, standard, and agentic cards, transaction and monthly limits, custom names, scheduled cancellation, per-card spending history, and mobile wallet support.

There’s a maximum of 5 new cards per day.

Capital One

Capital One provides 1 general-use virtual number and merchant-specific numbers, which can be locked, deleted, or replaced.

There are no custom spending limits, card names, scheduled cancellations, or separate budgeting controls.

American Express

Certain consumer cardmembers can access virtual cards, and eligible business cards have virtual cards with names, spending limits, reset schedules, dates, and spending tracking.

Customization features are mostly limited to eligible business cards.

Citi

Dynamic CVVs change with each use, and cards can be automatically linked to merchants.

There are preset spending limits, no custom expirations, and a limit of 20 CVV codes per 24 hours.

The 4 Types of Robinhood Virtual Cards

Robinhood Gold card has 4 types of virtual cards: free trial, single use, standard, and agentic.

Cards can be added to Google Wallet or Apple Pay, allowing you to use them online or in person using tap-to-pay.

Free Trial Virtual Cards

Free trial virtual cards can be used to sign up for free trials, such as software. These cards automatically cancel 24 hours after you create them. You should still cancel your free trial with the service provider, but creating a free trial virtual card offers a failsafe if you’re worried you might accidentally be charged after the trial period ends.

Single-Use Virtual Cards

Single-use virtual cards can only be used once. They cancel after the first transaction, and all subsequent transactions are declined. These are intended for use with unfamiliar merchants you plan to make a one-time purchase from. Refunds can still be processed on canceled virtual cards.

Standard Virtual Cards

Standard virtual cards are more customizable and have advanced settings. This type of virtual card works well for subscriptions and expense tracking. Using a standard virtual card, you can set limits for single transactions and overall monthly spending, select a custom automatic cancellation date, and make the card anonymous. Anonymizing the card changes the name to J. Doe instead of your real name, though it’s still associated with your billing address.

Agentic Virtual Cards

Agentic virtual cards work with AI agents, such as Claude, Cursor, Open Claw, and Codex. You can direct the AI agent to make purchases with your virtual card, such as snagging presale event tickets, but put guardrails in place, including spending limits. You can also require approval before an AI agent can use your agentic card for a purchase.

7 Smart Ways To Use Robinhood Virtual Cards

Robinhood Gold card’s virtual card feature can be used for privacy, protection, and convenience.

1. Add Protection to Free Trial Renewals

Before you sign up for a free trial, you can create a free trial virtual card on a Robinhood Gold card. The card automatically cancels 24 hours after it’s created and shouldn’t approve any further transactions — such as when a company tries to collect an automatic renewal.

Using a free trial virtual card doesn’t change your agreement with the merchant. You should still follow the merchant’s cancellation process and save your cancellation confirmation. Still, using a free trial virtual card provides an additional safeguard if the merchant attempts to process a renewal after you cancel.

2. Shop With Unfamiliar Merchants

Single-use virtual cards on the Robinhood Gold card are helpful when you want to make a one-time purchase on a website but don’t want to give the merchant a reusable card number. With a single-use virtual card, only the first transaction is approved. Any other attempts to charge the card are declined, which is helpful if you’re concerned about exposing your real credit card number to fraud.

You can still get a refund on the card after your virtual card is canceled. A single-use card isn’t helpful with preorders, multiple-transaction orders, hotel or rental car holds, or merchants that may run authorizations followed by final charges.

3. Give Each Subscription Its Own Card

You can create a standard virtual card for recurring service subscriptions and name it after the service, such as Netflix or a gym membership. With a separate virtual card, you can see how much each service charges and identify unfamiliar transactions. If your virtual card number is compromised, you can cancel it and create a new one without changing the payment details for your other subscriptions.

Each virtual card can have transaction and monthly limits, so you can limit how much your card approves for subscriptions. For example, if a subscription typically costs $15 per month, you can set a limit of $20 per transaction or per month. If the merchant increases or duplicates the charge, it would be declined. You’d need to monitor your agreement with the merchant and update limits to accommodate legitimate price increases, but this feature gives you more control over what can be charged.

4. Create Digital Budget Envelopes

Each Robinhood Gold card virtual card can have a separate name and transaction history, so it can be used to separate parts of your budget. For example, you could create cards and name them with their category and monthly budget amount, and then use that particular card for applicable expenses:

  • Groceries: $1,500
  • Dining: $400
  • Entertainment: $300
  • Streaming: $50

Because Robinhood Gold card’s virtual cards can be added to mobile wallets, including Google Wallet and Apple Pay, you can use them online or in person with tap-to-pay. For example, you could load your grocery virtual card into your online grocery store account, or add your entertainment virtual card to your movie theater account. When dining out with your virtual dining card, add it to your mobile wallet and tap to pay.

5. Add Spending Limits to Recurring Bills

You could also add limits to variable recurring bills. For example, if your power bill is on autopay and it’s usually about $300 per month, you could set up a virtual card with a $400 limit. With a limit in place, the card wouldn’t allow charges that are too high to go through and could catch errors before you pay for them.

However, it could also decline a legitimate bill that’s higher than usual, which would likely trigger late fees or service disruptions. You should still review your bill and set a reasonable buffer.

Virtual cards could also be used for budgeting occasional expenses, such as holiday gifts. Set the expense and budget in the name, such as: “Holiday Gifts: $750,” and you can track spending on that virtual card with separate transactions.

6. Track Temporary Expenses

Tracking temporary projects or events, such as a vacation, home improvement project, party, or back-to-school expenses, can help you gain visibility into your spending and set limits. For example, if you plan to take a trip with friends and settle up afterward, you can track your spending on a virtual card you name.

Robinhood Gold card’s virtual cards aren’t category locked, so you could, for example, accidentally use a groceries virtual card for holiday gifts and throw off your tracking. Still, naming and using cards for specific expenses can be a helpful budgeting tool if you set it up and use it consistently.

6. Remove Your Name From Sensitive Purchases

It’s possible to set your name to J. Doe on Robinhood virtual cards when you don’t want your real name shared with a particular merchant. It could be for a gift, a sensitive personal purchase, or a merchant you don’t trust with your identifying information.

Changing your name on a virtual card doesn’t offer full anonymity, as it still uses your real billing address, but it offers a layer of privacy.

7. Give AI Tools a Controlled Budget

Robinhood Gold card’s agentic virtual cards work with AI agents to make purchases on your behalf, but offer settings that give you control. For example, you can direct the AI agent to buy an item when its price falls below a set amount, purchase supplies within a project budget, or buy event tickets when they go on sale.

With the virtual card settings, you can set per-transaction or monthly limits, require transaction approval, and see the card’s spending history. If you no longer want to use the card, you can delete the virtual card without exposing your real card number.

Robinhood Virtual Card Limitations

Although Robinhood’s virtual cards are flexible and have helpful features, there are still limitations to keep in mind:

  • You can only create up to 5 new virtual cards per day.
  • Canceling a virtual card doesn’t cancel your subscription with the merchant — you still need to do that separately.
  • Spending limits can backfire if a legitimate charge exceeds what you set.
  • Single-use cards don’t work well when merchants split a purchase into multiple charges.
  • The anonymous name option still uses your real billing address.
  • Any purchases an AI agent makes with your agentic card are your responsibility.

The Robinhood Gold card has no annual fee but requires an active Robinhood Gold membership, which costs $50 per year. Some other credit card issuers offer no-annual-fee cards with virtual numbers, though their controls may be less extensive than Robinhood’s virtual card features.

Privacy.com is another alternative, with a free plan that offers up to 12 new virtual cards per month, single-use and merchant-locked cards, and transaction, monthly, annual, or total spending limits. Paid plans starting at $5 per month add features such as additional virtual cards, category-locked cards, and notes. However, Privacy.com’s virtual cards only work with linked checking accounts or debit cards, so you can’t use a credit card with the service.

Final Thoughts

The Robinhood Gold card isn’t the only credit card with virtual cards, but its features are more flexible than most. You can use Robinhood virtual cards to reduce exposure of your real card number, add controls for subscriptions and budgets, and control purchases made by AI agents.

This card isn’t worth getting just for virtual cards, especially since it requires a paid Robinhood Gold membership. But if you already have Robinhood Gold or plan to use the card’s 3% cash-back rewards, the virtual card’s features add utility for privacy, budgeting, and convenience.
