There’s a lot happening with Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). It’s a founding member of Star Alliance but will make the jump to the SkyTeam alliance in just a few days. And the airline is offering a status match that ends on August 30, 2024.

This could be a great way to secure SkyTeam elite status when SAS officially makes the switch on September 1, 2024. Data points from status match applicants look positive, with numerous people reporting how easy it was.

Should you apply before the deadline? Let’s take a look at the details.

SAS Status Match Details

A founding member of the Star Alliance, SAS went through bankruptcy, survived, and will now switch to SkyTeam on September 1, 2024, after Air France-KLM made a huge investment in the carrier by purchasing a large stake in it.

The carrier has hubs in Copenhagen (CPH), Oslo (OSL), and Stockholm (ARN), and maintains several nonstop routes to the U.S., an extensive network throughout Europe, and flights to Morocco, China, Thailand, and Japan.

That brings us to the present day: the status match to SAS. Available through August 30, 2024, you can match your status from other airlines to SAS EuroBonus and have shiny new SkyTeam elite status after the switchover. If you get EuroBonus Silver, you’ll have SkyTeam Elite status. With EuroBonus Gold, you’ll get SkyTeam Elite Plus status.

Status matches are available from Star Alliance Silver and Gold (matching to EuroBonus Silver and Gold, respectively) and Oneworld Ruby and Sapphire (matching to EuroBonus Silver and Gold, respectively). Eligible frequent flyer programs include British Airways Executive Club, Finnair Plus, Lufthansa Miles & More, and Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles.

Current EuroBonus elite members aren’t eligible, and you’ll need to earn EuroBonus status in the normal way going forward. That includes minimum flown segments with SAS.

To apply, you’ll need to complete this form online and will be asked to submit the following documents:

  • Proof of your current frequent flyer status
  • Past 90 days of activity in your loyalty account
  • Copy of your passport and proof that you live in Europe if you’re not a European citizen

It can take up to 10 days for a decision on your application. There’s no fee for the application.

Data Points From SAS Status Match Applicants

Now that this status match to SAS has been open for a while, numerous data points are available on StatusMatcher.com. Numerous people have received a status match instantly, while others got emails requesting documents.

Many people experienced quick approval so long as they had an eligible status tier in an eligible program (British Airways, Finnair, Lufthansa, or Turkish Airlines). Several reported an instant match without asking for much documentation.

Should You Apply?

Applying for an SAS status match is free, so there’s no harm in applying. The worst that could happen is you receive a “no” email.

If you’re looking for SkyTeam elite status for upgrades, bonus earnings, lounge access, and more, this could be a great opportunity to get it when SAS moves into SkyTeam on September 1, 2024. And you could get it at no cost, thanks to your current elite status.

Final Thoughts

A current SAS status match opportunity ends on August 30. When the airline moves over from Star Alliance, it will provide SkyTeam elite status as of September 1. Applying is free, but it’s open only to those with elite status in 4 airline programs.
