Spirit Airlines ceased operations on May 2, 2026, leaving those holding the Free Spirit® Travel More World Elite Mastercard® wondering what will happen to their card.

Now, cardholders have their answer, as their card will be converted to a cash-back credit card from Bank of America — the issuer of Spirit Airlines’ credit cards.

Here is everything you need to know about the conversion.

Free Spirit World Elite Card Conversion Details

If you’re currently a Free Spirit World Elite cardholder, you can expect that Bank of America will mail you a new card to replace your existing card soon, and you can continue using your current card as normal in the meantime. Cards will be converted to the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card.

For added convenience, your account number, APR, and credit line will not change, and whatever your current account balance and transaction history are will automatically transfer over to your new card.

Additionally, you’ll be able to manage your new card directly through the Bank of America website or mobile app, just as you did with your previous card.

More importantly, your benefit of no foreign transaction fees will continue to apply, which is a welcome addition as the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card usually charges a 3% foreign transaction fee.

Keep in mind that any Free Spirit points you currently have, or points earned on transactions posted after April 28, will automatically convert into Bank of America cash-back rewards, though the exact details of which have not been announced yet.

Hot Tip:

The expiration date and/or CVV security code may change when you receive your new card in the mail, so you may need to update the details previously set on any automatic payments, subscriptions, or mobile payment platforms.

Is This a Good Change?

All things considered, yes, this is a good change for cardholders, as the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card offers some useful benefits to cardmembers, including:

  • 3% cash-back in the category of your choice: gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores, or home improvement/furnishings (your category can be changed each month), limited to the first $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter
  • 2% cash-back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs, limited to the first $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter
  • The ability to boost their cash-back rewards by 10% to 75% with the BofA Rewards program
  • $0 annual fee

The ability to tailor your top 3% category based on upcoming large purchases is a big asset, and you have a wide range of options to choose from — including online shopping, which is a rare bonus category.

Plus, your new Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card will be even better than the standard version, thanks to the inclusion of no foreign transaction fees.
