If you’re struggling to keep up with all of the Spirit Airlines news, we don’t blame you. It’s been a sea of change for the yellow-and-black carrier in the past year.

Spirit Airlines is in the midst of its second bankruptcy in as many years. Now, the carrier says it has plan for how to get out of bankruptcy, get things on track for the future, and return to profitability.

What’s the plan? Let’s take a look.

Spirit Airlines’ New Plan for Getting out of Bankruptcy

To be clear, Spirit‘s new plan applies to what it will do after bankruptcy. The airline already has an agreement for exiting bankruptcy, announced last month.

Here’s what the airline plans:

  • Optimize fleet size: Right now, Spirit has close to 100 planes, but the carrier plans to drop “to 76-80 planes by third quarter 2026,” which will reduce debt and operating costs.
  • Refocus on network: The carrier will focus on demand and profitability for routes, reduce flying on days with low ticket sales, and focus on hubs at Detroit (DTW), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), the New York City area (EWR/LGA), and Orlando (MCO).
  • Increase premium choices: First class and premium economy products will expand with a third row of Big Front Seat while focusing on price and value.
  • Make financials stronger: Spirit will reduce costs, dropping debt from $7.4 billion (before the Chapter 11 filing) to $2 billion after emerging from bankruptcy, by focusing on efficiencies and cutting expenses.
Hot Tip:

We haven’t heard about any changes to the airline’s Free Spirit loyalty program, so travelers shouldn’t expect any surprises there.

Will This Plan Work?

Before analyzing the plan, let’s remember how we got here in the first place.

Spirit filed for a second bankruptcy just months after emerging from the first. There were rumors that the airline could shut down or lose its ability to accept credit card payments before getting a $100 million lifeline. Spirit has cut staff and dropped numerous cities from its route network.

And all of this came after major changes to the airline’s business model back in 2025, dropping what made it famous and adding premium perks to compete with “regular” airlines.

But Spirit exited its first bankruptcy after just 4 months, back in 2025, and clearly things weren’t fixed. That’s why a second Chapter 11 filing came so quickly.

Spirit became famous for its cheap fares and for doing things differently from other airlines. Now, it’s largely mimicking legacy carriers. It will also have fewer planes to fly to new places, and it seems like the carrier might serve some routes less often.

That leads to fewer options for customers, who might need to book a flight with another airline rather than Spirit — meaning money walks out the door, which Spirit can’t afford right now.

Moreover, Spirit is trying to fix things by abandoning its core identity and trying to be more like other airlines. That is a big gamble.

Final Thoughts

Spirit has announced its plans for postbankruptcy operations, including fewer planes, fewer routes, and fewer expenses. It also plans to lean into premium offerings.

Those premium offerings are part of a plan to compete with legacy carriers, but that’s not what made Spirit famous — or developed loyal customers — in the first place. Will this plan work? Only time will tell.
