United Airlines has announced that it will resume a popular Canadian route after a 5-year hiatus.

Beginning in the spring of 2025, the Chicago-based airline will resume nonstop service from Houston to Edmonton, Alberta.

“This new nonstop connection between Houston and Edmonton bridges two dynamic regions and strengthens the bonds between our communities,” said Mark Weithofer, managing director of domestic network at United. “As a global gateway to Latin America and beyond, Houston is proud to serve as a vital link that connects these two corners of the world, fostering growth, innovation, and shared experiences.”

Let’s take a closer look.

United Resumes Houston-Edmonton Service

After a pandemic-induced hiatus, United Airlines has announced that it plans to resume nonstop service between its hub in Houston (IAH) and Edmonton (YEG), the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta, as of next year.

The route officially restarts in May 2025, initially with 4 weekly flights. Then, in November 2025, service will increase to daily, according to the following schedule:

  • Depart Houston (IAH) 4:30 p.m. — Arrive Edmonton (YEG) 8:10 p.m.
  • Depart Edmonton (YEG) 8:05 a.m. — Arrive Houston (IAH) 1:29 p.m.

United will operate this route with an Airbus A319, which has 128 seats: 78 in economy, 42 in economy plus, and 8 in first class.

As the gateway city to Jasper National Park and the Canadian Rockies, Edmonton is a fast-growing metropolis with a younger population than other Canadian towns; thus, it’s no surprise United decided to relaunch this route.

Also, Houston and Edmonton are big players in the energy sector. This means that energy professionals in each city will have more opportunities to work together and expand in key international markets. The long-awaited return of this route will help strengthen economic ties and give business and leisure travelers more convenient choices.

In addition, United will launch summer, seasonal, nonstop service from Edmonton to its hub in Chicago (ORD), with 3 weekly flights beginning in May of 2025.

Bottom Line:

After a 5-year break, United Airlines will resume flights between Edmonton International Airport (YEG) and its hub at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), starting in May 2025.

Final Thoughts

It’s great to see United bringing back a popular route to Edmonton from its Houston hub, especially after a protracted hiatus. This route should bolster the energy connections the cities share, provide more options for leisure travelers wanting to experience the Canadian Rockies, and give Alberta’s residents a way to escape the cold northern winters in the southern United States and beyond.
