The FIFA World Cup 2026 has descended upon North America, and airports in host cities have spent years preparing not just for more passengers but also for international visitors who don’t know the city or speak the language and need to get to a stadium.

Upgraded Points previewed the World Cup activations at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), where airport, transit, and host committee officials shared the city’s preparations for tournament visitors.

Terminal upgrades, fan activations, and faster screening are among the ways airports are welcoming soccer fans across North America — let’s take a look at what’s happening.

Airports Are Preparing for More Passengers

Airports across the host cities have added gates, upgraded terminals, and brought in faster screening technology. TSA has added additional personnel, canine teams, Touchless ID, and advanced scanners for the tournament.

Miami International Airport (MIA) is preparing for 1.2 million additional passengers, and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) expects nearly 9.4 million summer travelers, up 6.3% from last year.

Houston’s IAH and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) have prepared for more than 4.5 million passengers during the World Cup period. As one of the few host cities that can connect nonstop to all of the others, Houston’s airports plan to handle travelers attending games in the city as well as connections throughout North America.

“We have 2 World Cups here. We have what’s happening in Houston, and then we have what’s happening connecting through our airport,” says Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports.

IAH completed a new international terminal and expanded expedited arrival options, including Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP). The airports aim to get passengers through TSA in under 22 minutes and through customs in under 30 minutes.

Other host cities have made similar changes. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) opened 9 new or rebuilt gates ahead of the World Cup starting.

And in Canada, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) expects 2.7 million passengers during the World Cup and has installed CT scanners, biometric boarding, and a 24/7 FIFA coordination desk. Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) expects 17 million passengers this summer and has enhanced staffing and emergency response coordination, as well as opened a dedicated games operations center.

Airports Are Part of the World Cup Experience

Airports are extensions of the tournament, with World Cup merchandise, activation zones, and local food offerings for visitors.

Airport World Cup activation zones include soccer photobooths, giveaways, photo backdrops, scavenger hunts, and interactive challenges. Each airport offers city-specific World Cup merchandise in its gift shops, and passengers can watch matches on airport TVs dedicated to the World Cup.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) added a virtual reality soccer experience and a large-screen spectator zone, while MIA has fan zones and soccer-themed art exhibits.

American Airlines has added gate celebrations and match-themed menu items to lounge experiences at select Flagship Lounge and Admirals Club locations.

Passengers can also expect FIFA volunteers throughout the airports, multilingual resources, and wayfinding help in terminals.

“We want you to get that feeling the second you get off the plane that you’re in a World Cup city and you’re ready to start your World Cup experience,” says Szczesniak.

Enhanced Transportation Beyond the Airport

Getting through the airport is only part of the challenge for World Cup visitors, and host cities have plans to move fans between airports, downtown districts, fan festivals, hotels, and stadiums.

“The games are going to be awesome, and the same with the Fan Fest, but if you can’t get in and out, or it’s not easy and smooth getting to and from, it really distracts from the experience,” says Chris Canetti, president of the Houston Host Committee.

Reducing dependence on cars is key for host cities. Houston offers direct bus service to both airports from downtown, with rail connections, and has increased METRORail train frequency, along with suburban Park and Ride service expanded to evenings and weekends.

Vancouver added buses and extended SkyTrain service, and Dallas is pointing fans to DART, TEXRail, TRE, and charter buses to the stadium area. Kansas City has ConnectKC26 motorcoach service, and Los Angeles Metro has direct bus service to matches from multiple locations.

“Wayfinding was a large concern,” says Meredith Johnson, chief communications officer for METRO. “We all came together — the city, the county, METRO, the Sports Corp — and said, how can we make sure that there’s kind of a universal language throughout?”

Final Thoughts

Host city airports are treating World Cup arrivals as a first-impression moment, bringing in enhanced processing, more visible help, clear transportation guidance, and terminals that feel like part of the event. If you’re traveling for the World Cup, check airport and transit guidance before arrival, allow extra time around match days, and consider public transportation where available.
