Finnair offers a pair of lounges for passengers on its long-haul flights departing Helsinki’s airport. While the entrances to the Business Lounge and Platinum Wing are found in the same reception area, the lounges have different access rules and different amenities.

The Business Lounge is available to more people and therefore has bigger crowds — plus more noise. It has a solid number of amenities, and this is the larger lounge. By contrast, the Platinum Wing is smaller, more refined, and has more premium dining. It also boasts a true Finnish culture item: a functioning sauna inside the lounge.

How do you access these lounges? And what are their similarities and differences? Let me walk you through the Finnair Business Lounge and Platinum Wing for a closer look.

Gaining Access to the Finnair Business Lounge and Platinum Wing

Both the Finnair Business Lounge and Finnair Platinum Wing use the same entrance. The lounges are near gate 52 in the non-Schengen area of Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL). The location of the lounges means they’re available for passengers exiting the Schengen Zone in Europe but aren’t available for those flying domestically or taking short-haul flights within Schengen on Finnair.

When you arrive at the lounge, receptionists at a desk can assist you if you want to pay for entry, have questions, or if your boarding pass isn’t opening the automated gates. You’ll also find a nice display of uniforms from Finnair’s past in the reception area.

Business Lounge

Passengers flying in business class with Finnair or a Oneworld airline partner have access to the Business Lounge. They can enter by simply scanning their boarding pass at the electronic gates facing the lounge to the right side of the lobby.

Additionally, those with Gold status in Finnair Plus can access the Business Lounge when flying with Finnair or on a Finnair codeshare flight, regardless of what cabin they’re traveling in. Access is also available for those with Oneworld Emerald or Sapphire status, and anyone accessing the lounge via status can bring a guest.

Passengers flying with Finnair and not traveling in business class can pay to visit the Business Lounge before their flight. The price can vary, but passengers flying to the U.S. may see a price of $51.90 for prepaid lounge access in the “Manage my booking” section of the Finnair website.

Hot Tip:

Passengers with Business Light tickets don’t have complimentary access to the Business Lounge. They need to pay for lounge visits to the Finnair Lounge.

Platinum Wing

The Platinum Wing is more exclusive, accessible only by those with Platinum or Platinum Lumo status in Finnair Plus, the airline’s rewards program, or Oneworld Emerald status with a partner airline.

Finnair Platinum and Oneworld Emerald members can bring a guest, while Platinum Lumo members can bring 4 guests.

Children under 18 can enter the lounge as complimentary guests for any Oneworld or Finnair elites who have access to the lounges. Passengers accessing the lounge with business class tickets cannot bring guests into the lounge.

It’s not possible to buy access to the Platinum Wing.

The Business Lounge has several seating styles and areas, including pod chairs in the first area near the entrance. There is also restaurant-style seating in the front of the lounge, including long benches facing round tables.

Near the Business Lounge buffet, seating is restaurant-style, with tables and chairs. At the far end of the Business Lounge, cubicles, armchairs, and curved sofas provide several additional types of seating.

Platinum Wing

Seating in the Platinum Wing is more premium, as the most basic chair is this style of armchair between the bar and dining area.

If that’s the most basic seat, seating is pretty good.

Plush lounge chairs are another option, available in this nook to the left of the bar and behind the entrance to the showers.

Along with tables and chairs in the dining room and box-shaped privacy seating nearby, the Platinum Wing has a living room-style area behind a curtain at the end of the dining room. This area has sofas, armchairs, seats with high dividers, and windows toward several gates for planespotting.

Entrees here during my visit included a reindeer burger, veggie burger, tofu poke bowl, and garlic chicken, but the dishes rotate seasonally.

The Platinum Wing also has a self-serve drink station with soda and coffee, while the bar offers premium alcohol not available in the Business Lounge. Staff here can pour wines, beers, cocktails, and mocktails.

Final Thoughts

While the Finnair Business Lounge and Platinum Wing share many similarities, they also have key differences. Access rules for the lounges are different, as are their sizes and noise levels.

Both lounges have toilets, showers, food, and drinks, but the options in the Platinum Wing are higher quality — and this side of the lounge also has a sauna, which is far from a common airport lounge amenity. The Platinum Wing’s elevated offerings make sense, given that this is the airline’s premium space.

Finnair has 2 lounges at the Helsinki airport. The Business Lounge is open to passengers in business class, those with Finnair Plus Gold status, and passengers with Oneworld Emerald or Sapphire status. How much does the Finnair lounge cost?

Those wanting to pay for access to the Finnair Business Lounge in Helsinki can pay at the entrance or add lounge access to their trip in advance using the “Manage My Booking” feature. Does Finnair have a business class lounge in Helsinki?
