Walt Disney World offers more than just its 4 theme parks, with water parks, golf courses, resort pools, and waterfront dining. Whether you’re looking for Disney magic without ever setting foot in the parks or want to enjoy a rest day with some activities, these are our tried and true recommendations for nonpark days at Disney World.

Swimming

With the typically hot and humid weather of Orlando, Florida, it’s swim season almost year-round. And it’s especially refreshing to take a dip when you need a break from the heat and crowds at the parks in the summer.

Disney World has 2 water parks: Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park and Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park. Both parks are a great place to relax, but we’re partial to Blizzard Beach, with its unique tropical-alpine theming, a longer lazy river than Typhoon Lagoon’s, and attractions that are friendly for kids who are too big for kiddie pools but not ready for big slides yet. It’s next to Disney’s Winter Summerland Miniature Golf Course, so it’s convenient if you plan to hit both.

Typhoon Lagoon has a massive wave pool with punishing 6-foot swells every 90 seconds that give my kids a thrill, and the lazy river and slides are solid. It’s close to Disney Springs, in case you want to pair your visit with shopping or a big meal after swimming.

The Typhoon Lagoon wave pool is the largest outdoor wave pool in North America.

Choosing between the water parks mostly depends on which park is open. Disney World typically closes one of the water parks for maintenance while keeping the other open, depending on the time of year. Sometimes, both water parks are open, usually in the summer.

Any day is a great day to visit Disney World water parks, but Disney World resort guests visiting in summer 2026 can plan a visit on check-in day. From May 26 to September 8, 2026, Disney World resort guests get free admission to the water parks on check-in day. This is an easy way to unwind after a travel day.

We recommend taking an early flight so you can arrive with enough time to enjoy this benefit. It’s only valid on your arrival day and can’t be transferred to your second day. However, a split-stay strategy, where you move to a different Disney World resort during your trip, can give you another day to visit the water parks for free.

Resort pools are another way to swim at Disney World, and visiting on a hot summer afternoon is one of the smartest moves you can make. Resort pool access is included with Disney World resort stays year-round. Many of them feel like small-scale water parks, with slides, splash areas, and themed environments.

Some of the best resort pools are at Deluxe resorts. For example, Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Disney’s Beach Club Resort share Stormalong Bay, a 3-acre pool complex widely considered the best on any Disney World property. It features a sand-bottom pool, shipwreck-themed slide, and lazy river. The Lava Pool at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has a volcano slide and zero-entry access, and you can see Magic Kingdom fireworks from the pool deck.

Although pool features vary by resort, they’re all enjoyable. Moderate resorts, such as Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside and Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, have themed pools with slides and hot tubs. Value Resorts, such as Disney’s All-Star Music Resort, also feature large themed pools.

Golfing

Golfing at Disney World can offer a peaceful break from ride queues and is set amid some of the resort’s most natural settings, with wide-open green spaces. Whether you’re a serious golfer or more of a casual putt-putter, there’s fun golfing to explore.

Disney World features 4 golf courses and 2 miniature golf courses:

Disney World’s golf courses are professionally maintained and operate as traditional golf clubs. The Magnolia and Palm courses host competitive events, while Oak Trail is a 9-hole walking course good for beginners and families.

FootGolf is available at the Oak Trail course. This was one of my family’s most unexpectedly fun nonpark experiences.

FootGolf is soccer meets golf, and you use a soccer ball to aim for holes amid the traditional golf course. It’s fun but approachable, and it doesn’t require any special equipment other than a ball provided by the course. Because it’s on a 9-hole walking course, it’s a fairly short game and easy to squeeze in with other activities for the day. You don’t have to be athletic or even particularly good at golf or soccer to enjoy it.

FootGolf at Disney World was a unique experience.

Miniature golf at Disney World offers a lighter, whimsical experience, with 2 courses to choose from. Winter Summerland Miniature Golf has 2 18-hole courses (winter and summer) and is themed around Santa Claus vacationing in Florida. Fantasia Gardens and Fairways Miniature Golf also features 2 18-hole miniature golf courses inspired by Disney’s “Fantasia.”

Hot Tip:

Winter Summerland is next to Blizzard Beach, so you could pair miniature golf with a water park day.

Tri-Circle-D Ranch

Tri-Circle-D Ranch is at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and features stables with Cinderella’s ponies; the horses of Main Street, U.S.A.; and the Dragon Calliope. It’s worth going out of your way for if you’re interested in horses or want to do a ride.

Visiting the stables is free, and you can see various horse breeds, including Percherons, Clydesdales, and Belgians. The hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Walk-up pony rides are available for kids, and you can book trail rides and carriage rides ahead of time.

A visit to the stables pairs well with a visit to Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue dinner theater, which is at the resort close to the stables.

Hot Tip:

Tri-Circle-D Ranch is deep within Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, a sprawling campground. The easiest way to get to the stables using Disney World transportation is to take a resort boat from the Magic Kingdom and then walk a short distance from the dock. Otherwise, you can ride a bus to the resort, then get on the internal bus for drop-off near the stables.

Resort-Hopping

Even if you’re not staying at a particular resort, you’re welcome to visit, explore the lobby, shop, dine, and enjoy the atmosphere. My family enjoys resort-hopping because we can get a taste of each resort’s theme and personality, experiencing multiple destinations in a day. It’s also fun to experience various forms of Disney transportation as we get around, including resort boats, Disney Skyliner, and the monorail.

Some of my family’s favorite things to do while resort-hopping are grabbing a meal or snack at one of the resort’s restaurants, hitting the arcade, and exploring the unique activities available at each resort. For example, giant chess at Disney’s Riviera Resort, the String of Memories educational activities at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, various playgrounds across the resorts, and a nature scavenger hunt at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort.

Resorts may also offer recreational activities, including fishing and bike rentals, and all resorts have scheduled movies under the stars and campfires.

We often resort-hop around the holidays to see displays at certain resorts, such as gingerbread houses and Christmas trees. You can also see Easter eggs at some resorts.

Cardholders of the Disney® Inspire Visa® CardDisney® Premier Visa® Card, or Disney® Visa® Card can get 15% off select guided tours and 10% off select recreation experiences, select merchandise purchases, and select dining locations. Details on participating locations can be found here.

Disney Springs

Disney Springs is Disney World’s massive shopping, dining, and entertainment district, and you can visit without paying an admission fee.

World of Disney at Disney Springs is the largest Disney store in the world, and it’s also home to numerous specialty stores and brand-name retailers. It’s a good place to pick up souvenirs that you don’t have to carry around the parks, browse seasonal merchandise, and find unique Disney collaborations.

Some of the best dining at Disney World is at Disney Springs, from one-of-a-kind snack spots to celebrity chef outposts. These range from quick kiosks to themed restaurants and waterfront dining.

Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar
Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar has waterfront dining with holiday overlays.

Entertainment and activities are extensive, including Amphicar vintage car boat rides, the Aerophile tethered balloon ride, “Drawn to Life” Cirque du Soleil show, bowling at Splitsville, and movies at AMC. There are also free live music stages throughout Disney Springs.

One of our favorite spots to visit at Disney Springs is the Coca-Cola Store Rooftop Beverage Bar. This bar has a great view overlooking Disney Springs, and you can try numerous international Coca-Cola flavors.

We got a flight of 14 Coca-Cola drink flavors from around the world, including the famed Beverly Italian soda.

Disney Springs is great for nonpark days because it offers free entry and parking, flexible timing, and activities that pair well with water parks or resort-hopping. It’s great if you want a Disney World experience on an arrival or departure day or when you need a break from the parks.

Hot Tip:

We also like to visit Disney’s Character Warehouse at Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets for off-site shopping. This Disney outlet offers generous markdowns on merchandise that didn’t sell in the parks. It’s usually about a month or so behind park stores, such as holiday items in January or merchandise from previous EPCOT festivals.

Final Thoughts

It’s easy to think of Disney World as just 4 theme parks, but it’s an entire vacation destination. Some of my family’s favorite Disney World moments go beyond the parks as we float a lazy river, kick a soccer ball across a fairway, ride Cinderella’s ponies, or catch live music at Disney Springs.

Adding nonpark days to your Disney World trip can save you money and make your vacation feel more relaxed and sustainable, especially during brutal Florida summers. They also offer variety with pool afternoons, miniature golf evenings, and dining at unique resorts.

Whether you’re visiting without park tickets, need a midtrip break, or want ways to stretch your vacation budget, these nonpark activities offer engaging fun without Lightning Lanes or rope-drop alarms.
