Hotels in Maui are famously expensive — especially if you travel during the most popular times for tourists, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, or spring break. Those looking for a cheap stay on the island may find the lowest prices out near the airport.

If you want something away from the airport, though, you may be drawn to the Maui Coast Hotel — one of the island’s cheapest hotels near a beach.

What does this hotel in Kihei have to offer? Here’s what we discovered across 2 nights at this property in January 2025.

1. There’s a Resort Fee

The Maui Coast Hotel charges a daily resort fee of $46, including taxes. That’s per room per day, so multiply that by the number of rooms you’re booking and how long you’re staying at the property.

Resort fees are a bummer because they change the math after you liked the original price you saw for a hotel. So while the Maui Coast Hotel advertises rooms starting from $265.05, that’s before tacking on $90 or more in taxes and fees.

What does the resort fee cover? It includes use of the hotel’s facilities, such as the pool, Wi-Fi, parking, and shuttle (limited to the Kihei area).

The resort fee also includes complimentary bicycles that you can check out from the front desk.

Ask reception to unlock these bikes for you.

The fee doesn’t include any meals or things like beach umbrellas, though those are available to rent. I’ll discuss that in the amenities section.

Hot Tip:

Check out our guide to hotel resort fees, including what they are and how to avoid them as often as possible.

2. The Location Is the Best Feature

We wound up at the Maui Coast Hotel after being told we’d won a free trip and then being surprised with a timeshare presentation. However, we were very happy with the location of this property.

The Maui Coast Hotel sits on South Kihei Road, putting it at the southern end of Kihei and on the way to Wailea in South Maui.

The hotel isn’t directly on the beach, as it sits across South Kihei Road from the water’s edge. However, the hotel is within walking (or bicycle or shuttle ride!) distance from numerous bars, restaurants, shops, surf schools, beaches, parks, and more.

Heading up Kihei Road takes you to Ma’alaea and the road to the airport. Heading south takes you to Wailea, where you find trendy hotels like the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea (the one made famous in the first season of “The White Lotus”), and Grand Wailea Maui, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, among others.

3. Rooms Are Basic but Aren’t Lacking

The Maui Coast Hotel has 2 buildings. The Kai Tower sits closer to the pools and the ocean; its rooms are more expensive. We stayed in the cheaper Hoku Tower, which also has the hotel’s gift shop and reception.

Our room, 235, was immediately next to the elevators, which created noise outside of our room. We woke up to the sounds of roller bags on this tiled floor a few times during our 2-night stay.

Our room didn’t have modern touches like USB charging points, smart technology, or Bluetooth speakers. However, it wasn’t lacking any essentials.

Our room’s furnishings.

The king-size bed had 4 pillows (that didn’t provide much support) and a nightstand on each side. Each nightstand had a lamp, and we also found outlets for charging our phones on both sides of the bed.

A ceiling fan was above the bed, though it didn’t have a light. A digital thermostat was on the wall nearby.

At the far end of the room was a small sofa with a small ottoman.

On the opposite wall was a wood-and-glass desk with a lamp, 2 outlets for charging, and a pair of chairs.

Immediately inside the room’s entrance, we found mirrored sliding doors that led to a closet. Inside, we had an iron, ironing board, extra bedding, and a dozen hangers. A small safe was built into the wall.

Next to the closet was a small minibar area. The counter had a single-serve coffee machine, coffee supplies, and mugs.

Under the counter was an empty minifridge.

A compact bathroom was near the room’s entrance, across from the closet and minibar. Again, it wasn’t missing anything, but it didn’t have any extras.

A toilet was immediately in front of the bathroom door. If you were sitting on the toilet while someone opened the door, it would hit you. It was that close.

A sink was on the right in the middle of a large counter, providing ample space for our toiletries.

Several travel-size toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, and even a shower cap, were on the counter.

Under the counter was a spare toilet paper and a hairdryer. Towels hung on a rack behind the toilet, near the shower.

The shower-tub combo was small. Since I’m 5 feet, 10 inches tall, it was too small for me to take a bath, but it worked just fine as a shower.

At the far end of our room, we had a small balcony with a pair of metal chairs and a table. Numerous plants were in front of the railing, providing privacy — though it also meant we couldn’t see much.

4. Amenities Are Good

The Maui Coast Hotel had more amenities than we expected, given the fact it’s one of the cheaper hotels on the island. At check-in, we received a map of the grounds, highlighting where various facilities were, such as the pool, smoking area, and laundry facilities.

Pool Area

The hotel had 2 pools. The larger pool had freshwater — what you think of with a typical hotel pool — and there was also a smaller, shallower pool for little children. The pool was flanked by lounge chairs and shade umbrellas on 2 sides.

Nearby was a towel hut. Employees didn’t ask for our names or room number when picking up or returning the towels. Luckily, we didn’t see people claiming lounge chairs and then disappearing. Chairs that weren’t being used were empty, which is a positive.

No one claiming chairs before using them is a good thing.

Behind the lounge chairs, closer to the Kai Tower, was a hot tub and a saltwater pool. This long, skinny pool was popular for swimming laps during our stay.

At the far end of the pool area was a bar that had a wide range of drinks, sandwiches, nachos, and daily happy hour specials.

This area was popular throughout the day during our stay. The bar had ample seating and live music every night.

Fitness Center

At the front of the property, on the second floor above the Kihei Caffe, there is a large gym accessible by tapping the wristbands that serve as room keys for guests. The gym has water, towels, exercise mats, and free weights. There is no staff here, however.

In the center row of the fitness center, there are multiple cardio machines, such as ellipticals and bikes.

Further into the gym, there is an impressive number of weight machines.

Gift Shop and Beach Rentals

Behind the reception desk, there’s a gift shop that sells everything from chips and beer to sunblock and snorkels. Here, guests can rent beach chairs and beach umbrellas for $5 each per day.

Other Amenities

Other amenities at the hotel include EV charging, a shuttle that can take guests around the area, complimentary bicycles, and pickleball. There also are ice machines, water refill stations, elevators, and laundry facilities at the hotel.

One of the more unique amenities we saw was fresh flowers for guests to wear in their hair, including hairpins to hold them in place.

5. The Hotel Doesn’t Own a Restaurant

At the front edge of the property, along South Kihei Road, the Kihei Caffe is next to the hotel’s entry sign. However, the restaurant doesn’t belong to the hotel. That means guests can’t charge meals to their rooms and the hotel staff can’t provide complimentary food or drinks to guests.

6. The Hotel Has a Rewards Program

Before our visit, I hadn’t heard of the Stash Rewards program. The Maui Coast Hotel participates in this program for independent properties that very clearly states, “No chain hotels allowed.”

Stash Rewards members earn 5 points per $1 spent when booking at StashRewards.com. There are no blackout dates, and Stash points don’t expire.

On a sample weeknight in June, 2 guests could stay in a Hoku King Room (the basic room like we stayed in) for 34,200 points or $294 plus tax. The final total after taxes is $344.59, making Stash points worth roughly 1 cent each on this redemptionpretty good value for hotel points.

Interestingly, that rate is $9 cheaper than the cheapest price available on the hotel’s own website.

7. Goodbye Keys, Hello Wristbands

We didn’t receive keys or key cards during our stay. Instead, we had wristbands. These proved that we were staying at the hotel when using the shuttle or getting towels.

A sensor in the wristband unlocked our room, though we often had to turn the wristbands inside out to unlock external doors to the building.

Using the wristbands, we could also charge items from the pool bar or gift shop to our room. In this way, they worked like Disney Magic Bands at Disney’s on-property resorts.

Final Thoughts

We were pleasantly surprised by several aspects of our 2-night stay at the Maui Coast Hotel. Its location was fantastic, putting numerous dining and leisure options within walking distance. And despite being one of the cheapest properties in Maui, it didn’t feel cheap with run-down facilities or missing amenities. In fact, the amenities were better than we expected.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive stay in Maui or striking out at properties where you want to use your points, this could be a good option for your next trip to the Valley Isle. Numerous people seem to think that, anyway, given how popular the hotel was during our visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Maui Coast Hotel resort fee?

The resort fee is $46 per room per night. That’s after tax, so it’s the total amount you pay. The fee covers amenities like the pool, towels, bicycles, shuttle, pickleball courts, parking, and more.

How far is the Maui Coast Hotel from the beach?

The hotel is just across the street from a beach, and multiple other beaches are available within walking distance. To be clear, the hotel isn’t a beachfront property, as it’s across the street from the beach, so it doesn’t have rooms right on the ocean or direct beach access from the hotel.

How many rooms are in Maui Coast Hotel?

The hotel has 268 guest rooms across its 2 towers.

Where is the cheapest hotel in Maui?

The island’s cheapest hotels are typically found in Kahului, which is where the island’s main airport is located. Guests not wanting to stay by the airport, instead looking for more touristy areas near a beach, should look to Kihei as the cheapest area in Maui away from the airport. One of the cheapest hotels on the island near a beach and not near the airport is the Maui Coast Hotel, making it popular with tourists seeking a budget-friendly beach getaway.
