Welcome offers are a big part of the appeal of the American Express® Business Gold Card, often delivering a strong chunk of Membership Rewards points.

But the rules around who can actually earn those offers haven’t stayed the same. As the card has evolved over time, so has the fine print tied to eligibility.

This guide breaks down how those rules have changed over 12 years — from earlier versions of the card starting in 2014 through the present day.

As of 2026

As of 2026, American Express has made its welcome bonus offer rules a bit more flexible — and a bit less predictable — especially on business cards.

For the Amex Business Gold card, it’s no longer strictly a simple “once per lifetime” rule. Instead, Amex states, “you may not be eligible for the bonus if you’ve had this card” (Source: American Express) — or even an earlier version of it — before. Your overall history with Amex, like how many cards you’ve opened or closed over time, may also be reviewed.

In other words, eligibility is not always clear-cut. Even if you’ve never had the current version of the Amex Business Gold card, you might still not qualify for the welcome offer.

The upside is that Amex usually tells you upfront. If you’re not eligible, you’ll see a message during the application process, so you can decide whether to move forward before submitting.

Hot Tip:

American Express has long limited customers to 5 credit cards at a time, but that cap doesn’t include charge cards. Since the Amex Business Gold card isn’t classified as a credit card, it typically won’t count toward that limit — making it easier to add without affecting your existing Amex credit card lineup.

2014 to 2021

Around 2014, American Express introduced what’s now widely known as its “once per lifetime” rule, limiting cardmembers to earning a welcome offer on a specific card just once.

Before this shift, it was possible to earn an offer on the same card multiple times. But after 2014, that changed across most Amex products — including business cards like the Amex Business Gold card.

During this period, the rule was relatively straightforward: if you had the card before, you likely wouldn’t be eligible for the offer again.

2021 to 2023

By the early 2020s, Amex began enforcing this rule more consistently across its portfolio. The “once per lifetime” language became standard in most application terms.

At the same time, Amex started experimenting with targeted offers, including some that didn’t include lifetime language — though these were not widely available and often limited to select applicants.

For most people, though, the rule remained simple: 1 offer per card, period.

2023 to 2024

This is where things started to change. Amex began adding language stating that “you may not be eligible if you’ve had the card or a previous version of it” (Source: American Express).

For the Amex Business Gold card, this change mattered more than it might seem at first glance. The product had already gone through a rebrand — from the Amex Business Gold Rewards card to the current Amex Business Gold card — and this new language effectively tied those versions together.

In other words, even if you’d never had the current version of the card, having the older Amex Business Gold Rewards card could still impact your eligibility. That marked a move away from a simple, 1-card rule to something broader, where past versions of the product started to count against you.

2024 to 2025

During this period, Amex leaned more heavily into what many call the “pop-up rule.”

Instead of relying solely on the fine print, Amex began checking eligibility in real time during the application. If you didn’t qualify for the welcome offer, you’d see a message pop up before submitting — giving you a heads-up right away.

Amex also made it clearer that eligibility could depend on factors like:

  • How many cards you’ve opened or closed
  • Your overall relationship with Amex
  • Your past offer activity

This made things less predictable — even for applicants who had never held the Amex Business Gold card before, since approval for the offer was no longer tied to just whether you’d had the card in the past.

2025 to Today

Today, eligibility for the Amex Business Gold card works a bit differently.

Instead of showing the same offer to everyone, Amex often uses know if you’re approved with no personal credit score impact messaging (Source: American Express) — meaning your welcome offer (and whether you’re eligible) can vary based on your profile, and you’ll be notified prior to enduring a hard inquiry on your credit report.

This shift toward more variable offers isn’t unique to this card. In June 2025, the Platinum Card® from American Express moved to a similar model, introducing “as high as” welcome offers alongside higher minimum spending requirements — a sign of where things are heading across Amex’s lineup.

As it stands, the current public welcome offer for new applicants is advertised as “as high as” a certain number of points, depending on your profile and the offer shown:

  • As High As 200,000 points. Find Out Your Offer. You may be eligible for as high as 200,000 Membership Rewards® Points after spending $15,000 in your first 3 months of Membership. Welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible for an offer.

In general, the terms now say you may not be eligible if you’ve had the card or a previous version, that Amex can consider your overall account history, and that your eligibility is confirmed during the application process.

There are still some targeted offers out there without lifetime language, but they’re pretty rare — and not something most people should count on.

Final Thoughts

The rules around the Amex Business Gold card have gotten more complex over time — especially when it comes to who actually qualifies for a welcome offer.

What used to be a simple “once per lifetime” rule now factors in previous versions of the card and your overall history with Amex. On the positive side, you’ll usually know where you stand before applying, thanks to pop-up messages and personalized offers.

It’s not as straightforward as it once was — but it’s easier to avoid surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you earn the Amex Business Gold card welcome offer more than once?

Generally, no. American Express applies a “once per lifetime” rule to most cards, including the Amex Business Gold card, though newer terms suggest other factors can also impact eligibility.

What does Amex mean by “you may not be eligible?”

This language means eligibility isn’t guaranteed. Even if you’ve never had the card, Amex may still deny the welcome offer based on your overall account history.

How does the Amex pop-up work?

When you apply, Amex may display a pop-up message indicating whether you’re eligible for the welcome offer before you submit your application. That way, you can decide whether to proceed.

Does having a previous version of the Amex Business Gold card affect eligibility?

Yes. Amex may consider prior versions of the card (such as the older Business Gold Rewards Card), which could affect your ability to earn a new welcome offer.

Are all welcome offers the same for the Amex Business Gold card?

Not necessarily. Amex often uses personalized or “Find out your offer” messaging, so the offer you see — and whether you qualify — can vary.
