American Express has made some interesting changes to the American Express® Business Gold Card, shaking up the bonus categories and adding new statement credits and perks. The card will even be available in Rose Gold, like its personal American Express® Gold Card counterpart.
Here are the details on everything you need to know about the refreshed Amex Business Gold card and whether it’s worth the annual fee of $295 ($375 if application is received on or after 2/1/24) (rates & fees).
Effective October 3, 2023, Amex Business Gold card holders will earn 4x points per $1 on your top 2 spending categories each billing cycle, on up to $150,000 in spending each year:
Cardholders will no longer earn 4x points on U.S. shipping purchases starting February 1, 2024.
In addition, cardholders will earn 3x points per $1 on flights, prepaid hotels, and prepaid flight + hotel packages booked through Amex Travel or AmexTravel.com, and 1x points on all other eligible purchases.
Get 4x points in 2 select categories where your business spends the most each month (on your first $150,000 spent each year).
The American Express® Business Gold Card is excellent at racking up rewards for your business spend.
The card earns a whopping 4x points per $1 in the 2 categories (from a list of 6) that your business spends the most money on each month. With no need to opt-in or preselect your categories, so you can focus on what matters most — running your business.
Previously, the Amex Business Gold card did not offer any statement credits. You’ll now receive up to $240 back annually ($20 per month) for eligible purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores (enrollment required). Plus, cardholders earn up to $155 back annually for a Walmart+ subscription. This amounts to up to $395 in statement credits each calendar year (enrollment required).
Further, the Amex Business Gold card is adding cell phone insurance protection to double up with the 4x rewards you’ll earn on your cell phone bill. The insurance will cover up to 2 claims per year with up to $800 for each claim against theft and damage, including cosmetic damage.
While new perks are being added, the 25% airline bonus when using Pay With Points is (unfortunately) being removed on February 1, 2024. After that date, the only Amex card offering this benefit will be The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, where you’ll receive a 35% airline bonus.
In addition to the new bonus categories, up to $395 in statement credits, and new benefits, the annual fee for the card will be increasing to $375 as of February 1, 2024. You’ll want to make sure these new perks and benefits are worth more to you than the additional $80 fee for the card (upon annual renewal).Hot Tip:

Some will prefer the new benefits and perks of the Amex Business Gold card, while others will prefer the current version. In any case, if the card has been on your wishlist for a while, you should strongly consider adding it to your wallet sooner rather than later.
Doing so will allow you to enjoy the new benefits, effective immediately, along with the perks that will be removed on February 1, 2024. You’ll also receive the lower annual fee of $295 ($375 if application is received on or after 2/1/24) for your first year of card membership so long as you apply before February 1, 2024.
For the cell phone protection benefit of the Amex Business Gold card, coverage for a stolen or damaged eligible cellular wireless telephone is subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions and limits of liability of this benefit. The maximum liability is $800, per claim, per eligible card account. Each claim is subject to a $50 deductible. Coverage is limited to two (2) claims per eligible card account per 12 month period. Eligibility and benefit level varies by Card. Terms, conditions and limitations apply. Please visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for more details.
