The Business Platinum Card® from American Express has historically offered some of the most generous welcome bonus offers available, but not everyone can qualify.

While the offers can be impressive, eligibility rules have changed significantly over time.

From stricter policies in the mid-2010s to today’s more nuanced approach, here’s how welcome offer eligibility for the Amex Business Platinum card has evolved from 2014 through 2026.

As of 2026

As of 2026, American Express has moved toward a more flexible — but less transparent — approach to welcome offer eligibility for products like the Amex Business Platinum card.

Today, Amex states, “you may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this card or previous versions of this card” (Source: American Express). Other factors include how frequently you’ve opened or closed cards, your past behavior with welcome bonus offers, and your overall relationship with American Express.

Eligibility isn’t always obvious upfront, and you could be denied the bonus even if you’ve never held the Amex Business Platinum card.

The good news is that Amex typically makes this clear during the application process. If you’re not eligible, you’ll usually see a notification before you submit. That gives you the chance to back out without impacting your credit (Source: American Express).

Hot Tip:

The Amex Business Platinum card is not a traditional credit card, which means it generally doesn’t count toward Amex’s unofficial 5-card credit card limit. That can make it easier to add to your lineup without hitting Amex approval limits.

2014 to 2021

Around 2014, American Express rolled out its now well-known “once per lifetime” rule across most of its cards, including premium business products like the Amex Business Platinum card.

Before that, it wasn’t unusual for cardholders to earn a welcome bonus offer on the same card more than once. Once this rule took effect, those opportunities largely disappeared.

For this period, the policy was fairly straightforward: If you’d had the Amex Business Platinum card before, you likely wouldn’t be eligible for the bonus again.

2021 to 2023

In the early 2020s, American Express doubled down on consistently applying the lifetime rule across its card lineup. The terms and conditions on applications became more standardized, clearly stating that welcome offers were limited to 1 per card per lifetime.

At the same time, there were occasional targeted offers that didn’t include this restriction. These were typically limited and not expected for most applicants.

For the majority of business owners applying for the Amex Business Platinum card, the expectation remained fairly clear: If you’ve had the card before, you won’t get the welcome bonus offer again.

2023 to 2024

Eligibility language expanded in 2023. Instead of only referencing the current card, applications began noting that “you may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this card or previous versions of this card” (Source: American Express).

While the Amex Business Platinum card hasn’t seen major rebrands like some other Amex products, this update still signaled a broader shift. It suggests Amex is looking beyond whether you’ve had the exact card before and instead factoring in your overall account history.

2024 to 2025

In 2024, Amex enacted real-time eligibility checks, which many applicants now recognize as the “pop-up” system.

Amex moved away from only listing eligibility restrictions and started telling applicants upfront during the application if they weren’t eligible.

These decisions were based on a mix of factors, including:

  • How often you’ve opened or closed Amex cards
  • Your history of earning (and potentially gaming) welcome bonus offers
  • Your overall engagement with Amex products

This made eligibility less clear-cut. Even if you’ve never had the Amex Business Platinum card, your overall history with Amex could still affect whether you qualify for the bonus.

2025 to Today

More recently, Amex has personalized welcome offers — including for the Amex Business Platinum card.

Instead of a single public offer, many applicants now receive targeted offers in which the size of the bonus (and eligibility for it) can vary from person to person. This follows a broader trend across Amex’s premium cards.

In mid-2025, similar changes rolled out to the Platinum Card® from American Express, signaling a shift toward more dynamic, targeted offers. Today, the Amex Business Platinum card is often marketed with “as high as” language for its welcome bonus offers, so the offer you receive could differ significantly from that of another applicant (Source: American Express).

The terms now reflect a more layered approach: you may not be eligible if you’ve had the card before, Amex may consider your full account history, and your eligibility is typically confirmed during the application.

Targeted offers without lifetime language still exist, but they’re increasingly rare and not expected for most applicants.

Final Thoughts

The rules for earning a welcome bonus on the Amex Business Platinum card have changed significantly over time. What used to be a simple lifetime rule now takes more of your overall Amex history into account.

At the same time, we’re seeing much larger offers — sometimes as high as 300,000 points — which weren’t around before. While that can make welcome bonuses feel a bit less predictable, the upside is you’ll usually know where you stand before you apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you earn the Amex Business Platinum card's welcome bonus offer more than once?

In most cases, no. American Express generally limits welcome bonus offers to once per card, though newer terms suggest other factors may also impact eligibility. That said, some targeted offers may not include this restriction, so you could be eligible again even if you’ve had the card before.

What does “you may not be eligible” mean on Amex applications?

This means approval for the welcome offer isn’t guaranteed. Amex may consider your overall account history — not just whether you’ve had the card before.

How does the Amex pop-up affect your application?

If you’re not eligible for the welcome bonus offer, Amex will usually notify you with a message during the application process before you submit.

Do all applicants get the same welcome offer on the Amex Business Platinum card?

Not always. Amex often uses “Find out your offer” or “as high as” messaging, meaning your bonus and eligibility can vary based on your profile.

Can targeted offers bypass the lifetime rule?

Sometimes. There are occasional targeted offers without lifetime language, but they’re limited and applicants shouldn’t expect them.
