The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card launched in November 2021 with one of the strongest welcome bonus offers (and one of the lowest annual fees) in the premium travel card market.

This page tracks changes to the eligibility rules for that welcome bonus offer. The rules were simple for the card’s first 4 years, then tightened considerably in late 2025. Here’s the full history from launch to today.

As of 2026

Here’s where the Capital One Venture X card welcome offer eligibility stands as of early 2026.

The current public offer is:

  • Earn 75,000 miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months.

The full set of today’s eligibility rules includes:

  • You’re not eligible if you received the Capital One Venture X card new cardmember offer in the past 48 months.
  • Earning a welcome bonus offer on the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card or the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card does not disqualify you from the Capital One Venture X card welcome bonus.
  • If you earned the Capital One Venture X card offer within the past 48 months, you’re also blocked from earning a welcome bonus offer on the Capital One Venture card or the Capital One VentureOne card during that same window.
  • The 48-month clock runs from the date the bonus posts to your account, not from when the card was opened or closed.

Beyond those published restrictions, Capital One enforces a few application norms that aren’t officially documented but are common enough that we consider them unofficial rules:

  • Capital One generally limits cardholders to 5 personal cards (spread across card families) and 1 business card at any given time.
  • Capital One only approves you for 1 card every 6 months.

November 2021 to October 2025

When the Capital One Venture X card debuted in November 2021 with a 100,000-mile welcome bonus offer, the eligibility terms were about as clean as they get. Capital One’s published rule was easy to understand: Existing or previous cardmembers weren’t eligible if they’d already received the welcome bonus offer within the past 48 months.

What defined this period was what the rule didn’t say. Earning a bonus on the Capital One Venture card or Capital One VentureOne card had no effect on your eligibility for the Capital One Venture X card. Each card in the Venture family operated on an independent 48-month track. You could have earned the Capital One Venture card’s welcome offer earlier that same year and still qualified for the Capital One Venture X card’s bonus offer without any conflict.

The only friction during this stretch came from Capital One’s informal application norms. Capital One has consistently limited applicants to holding only a few of its cards at a time, and the issuer tends to be conservative about approving applications when someone has recently opened multiple credit cards. These aren’t published bonus-eligibility restrictions, but they can effectively stop an application before it starts.

Capital One counts the 48-month eligibility clock from the date when your welcome bonus posts to your account, not when you open or close the card. A Capital One Venture X cardholder who earned the bonus in early 2022 became eligible again in early 2026, even if the account was opened in late 2021.

For nearly 4 years, nothing changed. The published rule stayed consistent, card-specific, and uncomplicated.

October 2025

In October 2025, Capital One updated its terms to link all 3 personal Venture products under a shared 48-month bonus restriction for the first time since the Capital One Venture X card launched.1 This is often referred to as a “family rule.”

The updated terms created a tiered, asymmetric system based on which card you were applying for:2

  • Applying for the Capital One Venture X card: You’re ineligible if you earned the Capital One Venture X card’s welcome offer in the past 48 months (unchanged from before).
  • Applying for the Capital One Venture card: You’re now ineligible if you earned the Capital One Venture card or Capital One Venture X card bonus in the past 48 months (new rule).
  • Applying for the Capital One VentureOne card: You’re now ineligible if you earned any Venture family card bonus in the past 48 months (new rule).

The asymmetry was intentional. Applying for a more premium product within the Venture lineup, going from the $0-annual-fee Capital One VentureOne card up to the Capital One Venture card or Capital One Venture X card, remained allowed.

Moving in the other direction was blocked. A Capital One Venture X cardholder who’d earned that welcome bonus offer within the past 48 months couldn’t obtain a bonus offer for the Capital One Venture card or Capital One VentureOne card.

Bottom Line:

This was the first real tightening of the Capital One Venture X card’s welcome offer eligibility since launch, and it closed a door some travelers had used to collect bonuses across multiple tiers of the same product family.

As of Late 2025

The October 2025 update created genuine confusion about how the family rule applied in both directions. Some people read the new terms as restricting upward movement as well, meaning that earning a welcome bonus on a lower-tier card might now block eligibility for the Capital One Venture X card, too. Capital One’s initial language wasn’t entirely clear on that point.

By December 2025, Capital One clarified its position.3 Earning a welcome bonus on the Capital One Venture card or the Capital One VentureOne card does not disqualify you from the Capital One Venture X card’s welcome bonus. The upward pathway remained open, and Capital One confirmed that was always the intent.

Capital One Miles

The downward restriction stood. Earning the Capital One Venture X card’s welcome bonus within the past 48 months still blocks you from earning a welcome offer on the Capital One Venture card or the Capital One VentureOne card during that same period.

The practical result is a one-way rule: Cardholders who’ve earned lower-tier bonuses in the Venture card family can still qualify for the Capital One Venture X card’s welcome offer, while those who earn this bonus have to wait out the full 48 months before earning another offer anywhere in the card family.

Final Thoughts

The welcome bonus eligibility rules for the Capital One Venture X card were stable and uncomplicated for most of the card’s history.

A significant shift came in late 2025 with the addition of a family rule, and Capital One’s subsequent clarification made it reasonably clear.

If you’ve previously earned a Capital One Venture card or Capital One VentureOne card bonus, the Capital One Venture X card’s welcome offer is still on the table. If you’ve already claimed the Capital One Venture X card’s bonus, count 48 months from the date that bonus posted (not when you opened the card) before planning your next application in the Venture family.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get the Capital One Venture X card's 75,000-mile welcome bonus offer?

By applying directly with Capital One, you can apply for the current, public offer for the Capital One Venture X card. However, Capital One may send you targeted offers for a larger welcome bonus, assuming you opt in for communications via email or mail.

Can you earn another welcome bonus on the Capital One Venture X card?

If you follow the application rules, you can earn another welcome bonus. The Capital One Venture X card requires you to wait at least 48 months since the last time you earned a bonus from a welcome offer before you’re eligible again.

What is the value of 75,000 Capital One miles?

At Upgraded Points, we value Capital One miles at 1.8 cents each. That makes 75,000 miles worth $1,350.

Can I earn a welcome bonus on the Capital One Venture card and Capital One Venture X card?

You can earn a bonus on both, but the order is critical. New rules make it hard to move down from a more premium card to one with a lower annual fee. Thus, if you want a welcome bonus offer on both the Capital One Venture card and Capital One Venture X card, you need to earn the offer on the Capital One Venture card first. You can’t earn both welcome bonuses by moving in the opposite direction.
