Chase Sapphire Reserve’s Welcome Offer Eligibility Changes: 2016 to 2026

Earning a sizable welcome offer is one of the biggest initial draws that gets people looking at the Chase Sapphire Reserve^®. These bonuses are often worth substantial sums in Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

We’ve analyzed changes to the eligibility rules for this card’s welcome offer. Since its August 2016 launch, those rules have shifted multiple times.

Here’s exactly how these restrictions have changed since 2016.

As of 2026

Beyond rules specific to this card, Chase enforces a few broader policies that affect welcome offer eligibility:

• Chase’s widely reported 5/24 rule means applicants who have opened 5 or more new credit cards across all issuers in the past 24 months are typically not approved.
• Chase generally does not approve more than 2 of its own cards for the same applicant within any 30-day period.
• Under the current framework, each Sapphire card — the Chase Sapphire Reserve card and the Chase Sapphire Preferred^® Card — carries its own once-per-lifetime welcome offer bonus eligibility, but both can now be held simultaneously.

2016 to 2017

The Chase Sapphire Reserve card launched in August 2016 to extraordinary demand. Chase reportedly ran short on metal card stock within weeks, and it’s been called the first viral credit card.¹

From the start, bonus eligibility followed Sapphire family conventions: Applicants were ineligible for the welcome offer if they were current Sapphire cardholders or if they had received a Sapphire welcome offer within the prior 24 months. This mirrored restrictions already in place on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, which launched in 2009 with similar eligibility language.

No special enforcement mechanisms existed beyond the card’s application terms, and the rules were relatively straightforward to track.

2017 to 2018

On August 27, 2017, Chase formalized what became known as the One Sapphire rule. Under this policy, customers were limited to holding just 1 Sapphire-branded card at a time. If you held the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, Chase would decline your application for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, and vice versa.

While the card’s terms had always disqualified current Sapphire cardmembers from earning an offer, this formalization went further. Chase would reject the application itself, not merely deny the offer. In practice, it closed off any ambiguity around holding multiple Sapphire products simultaneously.

2018 to 2025

In August 2018, Chase significantly tightened the eligibility window, extending the cooling-off period from 24 months to 48 months. Per the updated card terms,² applicants were ineligible for the Chase Sapphire Reserve card’s welcome offer if they had received a new cardmember bonus on any Sapphire product within the prior 48 months, regardless of which specific card they had earned the bonus on.

The rule also applied retroactively. Someone who had earned a Sapphire welcome offer bonus in late 2016 would not become eligible for another Sapphire offer bonus until late 2020, regardless of whether they kept or closed the card in the interim — even though the rule came out in 2018.

Combined with the One Sapphire rule, this meant cardholders faced a strict 4-year wait between any Sapphire offer opportunities. The rules worked in tandem: You couldn’t hold more than 1 Sapphire card, and you couldn’t cycle back for another offer until 48 months had cleared. This framework remained effectively unchanged for nearly 7 years.

June 2025

In June 2025, Chase launched a comprehensive overhaul of the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, raising the annual fee and updating its benefit structure while simultaneously introducing the Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ as a new commercial card product. The eligibility rule changes took effect June 23, 2025.³

Both the One Sapphire rule and the 48-month rule were eliminated simultaneously. In their place, Chase introduced 2 significant changes. First, customers could now hold both the Chase Sapphire Reserve card and the Chase Sapphire Preferred card simultaneously.

Second, Chase replaced the explicit 48-month window with a proprietary, individualized eligibility determination, existing as a pop-up notification system similar to what American Express has long used. Applicants who don’t qualify for a welcome offer are notified via a pop-up during the application process and can withdraw without triggering a hard credit inquiry.

One limitation carried over from this initial rollout: Current Sapphire cardholders might still be blocked from earning a first-time bonus on the other Sapphire card, even if they have never received that product’s offer before. And that’s even though Chase says you can hold 2 Sapphire cards. The key word is “might.”

January 2026 to Today

On January 22, 2026, Chase updated the rules again. Under the current card terms,⁴ you can earn a welcome offer bonus on each individual Sapphire card once per lifetime. That’s true even if you currently hold the other Sapphire card.

If you hold the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and have never earned the Chase Sapphire Reserve card’s welcome offer bonus, you are eligible to apply for the Chase Sapphire Reserve card and receive its offer, and vice versa.

Final Thoughts

The rules around who qualifies for the Chase Sapphire Reserve card‘s welcome offer have evolved substantially since 2016, changing from a permissive 24-month window to a strict 4-year restriction and now existing within a per-card lifetime framework with individualized eligibility screening.

In some ways, the current system offers more flexibility. You can hold both Sapphire cards and earn each offer independently. But the lifetime restriction per card is a clear sign that Chase, like American Express before it, has closed the door on earning repeat offers on the same card as a repeatable strategy.
