For years, I booked hotels directly through each chain’s loyalty program. This was generally sound advice, as booking directly often came with extra benefits, allowed me to earn more points, and provided a safety net if something went wrong.

But as many programs now offer compelling reasons to book through them, I’ve changed my approach. The hotel program I tend to use most is American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR).

Certain premium American Express cards also provide Amex FHR credits, which have significantly changed how I use the program. An upcoming trip to Tokyo provided me with an excellent opportunity to research some great hotels in the city.

Here’s a look at the Amex FHR program, some of the benefits available when booking through FHR, and the best Amex FHR properties to book in Tokyo, Japan.
