Few travelers enjoy getting to the airport for a 5:30 a.m. flight, myself included. Each time that early alarm goes off, I question my sanity for booking such a flight.

I remind myself that there was a method to the madness and logical reasons I booked the first flight of the day. Then, each time I head to the airport long before the sun rises, I am confident I’ve made the right decision.

Here are all the reasons I book that early morning flight, and a few reasons why I sometimes loathe it.

1. I Have a Greater Chance of Reaching My Destination

The most important reason to book the first flight of the morning is the greater chance of being rebooked in the event of any disruption. Having the entire day’s flight schedule ahead of me, provided there is space available, improves the chances of reaching my destination.

Booking a flight that becomes disrupted later in the day limits my flight options. Plus, rolling delays and cancellations cause flights to fill up quickly, further reducing my rebooking options.

American Airlines plane at gate
Planes leaving on the first flight of the day typically arrive the night before. Image Credit: Christine Krzyszton

The planes used for early-morning flights typically arrive the night before and are more likely to be ready to depart than planes arriving from other destinations. Additionally, if I have a flexible schedule and the flight is oversold, I can volunteer my seat for possible compensation. Knowing there are still later departures gives me that choice.

2. Morning Flights Can Be Cheaper

Early-morning and late-night flights are generally less desirable and therefore can cost less than late-morning, midday, or early-evening flights. This isn’t always the case, as airfares are dynamic and can vary greatly with supply and demand.

Morning Flights United
Early-morning flights may cost less depending on the airport and travel dates. Screenshot: Google Flights

Just as award flights with several connections can cost fewer frequent flyer miles, the less desirable 5:30 a.m. flight may also cost fewer miles or less cash. I’m happy to take advantage of the savings when the early-morning flight is less expensive.

3. There’s Less Chance of Bad Weather

According to the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL), a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), thunderstorms are most likely to occur in the afternoon or evening. This timing makes morning flights the least likely to be delayed due to bad weather.

Bad weather can wreak havoc on flight schedules. Starting my journey early in the day, when severe weather is less likely, may make the difference between getting to my destination and not. Calmer morning weather can also mean a smoother flight with less turbulence.

If there is a weather disruption, I can count on the travel insurance from my premium travel rewards cards.

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express came through for me earlier this year when my flights were canceled due to weather. I paid for my round-trip airline ticket with my card and filed a successful trip delay claim to be reimbursed for hotel expenses.

Chase Ultimate Rewards

Both cards include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay travel protections I can fall back on when my trip is disrupted for a covered reason, including inclement weather.

Hot Tip:

Regardless of the time of day you fly, paying for your trip with a travel rewards card that offers travel protection can provide additional coverage. We’ve put together a list of some of the best cards with excellent travel insurance.

4. The Crew Is Rested

I have a great deal of respect and empathy for cabin crew and the challenges they deal with daily. However, having a well-rested crew, ready to start their day fresh, as opposed to those who may have lived through delays, disruptions, and cranky passengers all day, is always appreciated.

5. The Cabins Are Cleaner

I’m not a picky flyer. I can ignore a few crumbs on the floor and a sticky seatback tray that can be wiped down quickly in exchange for my flight leaving on time.

That said, boarding a plane that has just been cleaned is a pleasant experience.

6. It’s a Less Stressful Travel Day

Another great reason to book early-morning flights is that if all goes as planned, I’ll have a less stressful day flying. If something goes wrong, knowing I have time to make alternative plans adds peace of mind.

Airport Lounge by LHV TLL coffee
Enjoying a leisurely cup of lounge coffee can be a welcome part of traveling. Image Credit: Keri Stooksbury

Additionally, if I have connecting flights, I can build in some airport lounge time. I always look forward to enjoying a new lounge I haven’t been to or saying hi to the familiar staff at lounges I frequent. Having access to assistance from airline representatives in the lounge can also be a huge help during a flight disruption.

The bottom line is that early-morning flights help make the journey calmer overall.

How I Prepare for My Early-Morning Flight

Once it’s time for my early-morning flight, I make the most of my decision with this predeparture ritual:

  • I get up early the day before the trip. A long day helps me get a good night’s sleep the night before an early-morning flight.
  • I check in at the 24-hour mark, secure my boarding pass, and make sure everything is in order with my reservation.
  • I finish packing my bag the night before and set it by the front door.
  • I set the alarm and a backup alarm.
  • To save time, I skip breakfast and coffee before leaving.

I’m out the door by 4 a.m. for my 5:30 a.m. flight.

The Downside of Early Morning Flights

While there are many positive reasons to book early-morning flights, there can be downsides.

Morning Rush Hour

Although wait times vary greatly by airport and day of the week, the periods between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. are the busiest times at my home airport and many others. It’s no secret that business travelers prefer these flight times to reach their work destination early or to return home that day.

Less Sleep

Waking up at 3 a.m. to catch a 6 a.m. flight is no fun. Plus, the night before a trip, it can be difficult to fall asleep earlier than usual. This could be a significant challenge when traveling with a family.

Transport and Open Facility Challenges

I’m fortunate to live a very short drive from my home airport, which fully opens (including TSA checkpoints) long before the first flight of the day. However, when I’m flying out of other airports and relying on rideshares, public transport, or hotel shuttles, getting there early can be challenging.

Also, I’ve found myself overcompensating, allowing so much extra time that I arrive long before TSA checkpoints open.

Final Thoughts

There are more good reasons to book an early-morning flight than not to. It increases my chances of reaching my destination on time, and should a disruption occur, I’ll have more rebooking options.

Early morning flights may cost less. The weather is generally better in the early morning, the flight crew is rested, and the cabin is freshly cleaned. As long as it’s just me traveling, I’ll continue to overcome the minor downsides and choose an early flight.
