American Airlines has changed key terms to its longstanding 24-hour refund policy.

Now, AA requires tickets to be booked at least 7 days before departure to qualify for a full refund within 24 hours of purchase — a change first spotted by View from the Wing.

That means travelers who book a flight less than a week before departure are no longer entitled to a full refund. Let’s discuss the changes that have unfolded.

AA Tweaks 24-Hour Refund Rule

As of Wednesday, July 29, 2026, American Airlines updated the fine print of its Customer Service Plan. The major change to note here is an update to the 24-hour refund policy, which now requires that all tickets, regardless of fare class, be booked at least 7 days before departure to qualify for a full refund.

The change brings American in line with several other major airlines, including United and Southwest, which already have similar restrictions. Instead of a full cash refund, travelers will now receive a travel credit that generally expires 1 year from the date of issuance. Note that AA’s basic economy tickets are usually also subject to cancellation fees.

Hot Tip:

There is no change to AA tickets booked with miles. They have the most flexibility and can be canceled at any time for a full redeposit of miles and a refund of any taxes and fees.

What Does the DOT Require?

Officially, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) sets a standard across the board that requires airlines to offer a 24-hour cancellation window for reservations made at least 7 days (168 hours) before departure (Source: DOT).

Some airlines have historically gone beyond that requirement — including AA, which did so for nearly a decade. Since 2017, American Airlines has allowed travelers to receive a full refund for tickets canceled within 24 hours of purchase, even if the flight was scheduled to depart as little as 2 days later.

Delta remains the most flexible of any U.S. airline, offering a 24-hour refund window even for tickets purchased on the same day of departure.

Final Thoughts

Under American’s updated policy, that extra flexibility for those last-minute flights booked within 2 to 6 days of departure is going away. Unfortunately, the move isn’t entirely surprising, as airlines are notorious for aligning their policies over time — most often happening at the expense of consumers.

For travelers, our hope is that Delta continues to maintain its more generous 24-hour refund policy for last-minute tickets.
