American Airlines is resuming service on a previously-served route that’s sure to be welcomed by travelers looking to get some sun this winter.

Let’s take a look at the details of this route resumption!

American Resumes Pittsburgh-Cancún Flights This Winter

According to AeroRoutes, American Airlines will once again offer nonstop service between Pittsburgh (PIT) and Cancún (CUN) as of December 9, 2023.

The route was last suspended in August of 2018 and hasn’t operated since then. That’s all set to change later this year, however, with the launch of Saturday-only service. The flights will be operated by American’s Airbus A321 aircraft according to the following schedule:

  • Depart Pittsburgh (PIT) 8 a.m. — Arrive Cancún (CUN) 11:45 a.m.
  • Depart Cancún (CUN) 12:45 p.m. — Arrive Pittsburgh (PIT) 4:10 p.m.

These flights are sure to be a hit with travelers based in the Pittsburgh area who want to escape the cold, dreary winter for a warm and sunny Mexican vacation.

How to Book

These flights are already available to book with cash or American Airlines AAdvantage miles.

Cash rates aren’t cheap — you’ll pay about $465 for a round-trip journey beginning on the first day of the route’s resumption.

However, if you do choose to pay cash, be sure to use a card that will reward you for travel bookings. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® will earn you 3x Ultimate Rewards on all eligible travel purchases and includes excellent travel insurance to boot. Alternatively, The Platinum Card® from American Express earns 5x Membership Rewards on all flights booked directly with the airline or via AmexTravel.com (up to $500,000 per year).

If you prefer to redeem AAdvantage miles, you’ll pay 33,500 miles and about $110 in taxes and fees for the same round-trip journey. Though note that award rates will change depending on the date of travel as the American Airlines AAdvantage program uses a dynamic pricing model for its award tickets.

Final Thoughts

This is an exciting development for Pittsburgh-based travelers. Cancún is one of the most popular destinations for Americans, especially from colder northern climes. In sum, it’s great that those in Western Pennsylvania will soon have another option for escaping to the sun nonstop from their home airport.

Hopefully, the route will be such a success that American Airlines expands service to multiple days per week!
