Air Canada’s Aeroplan loyalty program just announced a change that will likely be popular with its users. Aeroplan status will now be valid until January 31, instead of expiring at the end of a calendar year. That means that if you have any elite status with Aeroplan, it will now be valid through to January 31, 2025; before the change, it would have ended on December 31 of this year.

Here’s what travelers need to know about the new 13-month status policy with Aeroplan.

Aeroplan’s 13-Month Status Validity

Aeroplan elite status will now be valid for 13 months, rather than 12 months.

That’s according to a statement by Air Canada announcing the change, which the airline says was driven by feedback from members. The window to earn Aeroplan elite status will remain based on activity between January 1 and December 31 of each year.

If you have already attained any status for 2025, earned in 2024, that status will be valid until January 31, 2026. You will be able to select your 2025 benefits by mid-January, like before.

Members who are expecting to earn a lower status tier for 2025 than their current level will have their travel benefits extended until January 31, 2025. Air Canada notes that this will give them an extra month to enjoy those benefits, and their new status will take effect on February 1. Benefits selection will be available by mid-February.

Aeroplan Status Levels

Aeroplan features five status tiers:

  • 25K
  • 35K
  • 50K
  • 75K
  • Super Elite 100K

25K and 35K map out to Silver status with the Star Alliance that Air Canada is a part of, with United Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, and many others. 50K, 75K, and Super Elite 100K result in Star Alliance Gold status, giving access to even more perks with the other airlines in the alliance.

No Action Needed

Aeroplan members do not need to do anything to secure the status extension, which will be applied automatically. The status end date will be visible online in Aeroplan accounts on December 31, 2024.

The validity extension is permanent. Air Canada says it is meant to fix the problem of elite status downgrades during the busy winter holiday travel periods.

Hot Tip:

Aeroplan has many partners, offering numerous possibilities for award redemptions. A good way to rack up Aeroplan points fast is the Aeroplan® Credit Card, which can be attractive for U.S.-based flyers.

Final Thoughts

Aeroplan has now joined the ranks of loyalty programs with a date beyond December 31 for status expiration. With many participants in airline loyalty programs earning status with activity later in the year, having a status expiration date after December 31 ensures that status remains valid pending the crediting of all relevant activity.
