American Airlines will send its most premium aircraft to Auckland, New Zealand (AKL) starting next year.

The recently unveiled Boeing 787-9P aircraft boasts the best passenger experience the airline offers across all cabins, so this should be welcome news for those traveling on these long-haul routes.

Let’s take a look at the details.

American’s New Dreamliner Will Fly Between Dallas and Auckland

From January 5, 2026, passengers flying American Airlines between Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) and Auckland will have the opportunity to experience the airline’s most premium aircraft.

Aeroroutes points out that Auckland will join Brisbane (BNE) as the second destination in Oceania to be served by the 787-9P from Dallas.

This new aircraft boasts American Airlines’ best-ever business class seat.

As such, we’d expect American to prioritize deploying the jet from its U.S. hubs on routes with plenty of business travel to cities like London and Tokyo. However, the quick introduction of the Dallas to Auckland route — one of the airline’s longest — would suggest that American is also prioritizing passenger comfort on its long-haul and ultra-long-haul services.

The aircraft also features completely overhauled premium economy and economy cabins. Heather Garboden, chief customer officer at American Airlines, described this jet’s premium economy seats as “a recliner in the sky.” These seats look to be up there with the best in the industry.

American has only received 4 of the aircraft type at the time of writing. Currently based at Chicago-O’Hare (ORD), the jets are predominantly in operation on routes from the Windy City to Los Angeles (LAX) and London Heathrow (LHR).

The network of routes served by American’s 787-9Ps will gradually expand as the airline receives more of them. In the meantime, watch out for the seat map below if you’re booking a flight with American Airlines in business class and it’s operated by a Boeing 787-9.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines’ newest aircraft brings a welcome upgrade to the passenger experience in all cabins — and soon it will be flying one of the airline’s longest routes. We look forward to the rest of the fleet’s delivery so it can be deployed on even more routes.
