American Airlines appears to be limiting partner airlines from booking certain close-in domestic saver award flights, which could make last-minute redemptions way pricier for travelers using programs like Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards or The British Airways Club to book flights with points close to departure.

Here’s what we are seeing.

Partner Programs Can’t Book Some Close-In AA Award Space

American Airlines appears to be blocking partner airlines from accessing nonstop domestic saver award space within roughly 5 days of departure, as first flagged by DansDeals.

The restriction seems to specifically affect partner mileage programs, including Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards, The British Airways Club, Finnair Plus, Japan Airlines Mileage Bank, and Qantas Frequent Flyer.

Based on reported findings, nonstop American Airlines award flights gradually disappeared from partner programs on a rolling basis over the past several days:

  • On May 24, flights departing May 30 stopped appearing
  • On May 25, flights departing May 31 disappeared
  • On May 26, flights departing June 1 were no longer available
  • On May 27, flights departing June 2 stopped showing up

Interestingly, the timing of the removals appeared tied to time zones, with East Coast routes reportedly disappearing first before Central Time departures followed later in the evening.

It’s worth noting that these flights still seem to be bookable using American Airlines AAdvantage miles. The restriction appears only to impact partner airline programs, making it impossible to access American’s saver award space shortly before departure.

That matters because partner programs often charge fewer miles than American for the exact same flight. Programs like Atmos Rewards and The British Airways Club can offer especially strong value on short, nonstop routes.

If this change is permanent, it will certainly impact travelers who usually book last-minute trips. It could also block access to newly released award seats. American sometimes opens additional saver availability just days before departure, assuming seats are available, but if partners can’t access that inventory, travelers’ only choice will be to redeem AAdvantage miles for the close-in flight they’re eyeing.

The carrier has tested similar restrictions before. In 2018, American temporarily blocked some saver awards within 2 weeks of departure. This latest change appears to be more limited — just affecting partners — since travelers can still book flights directly through American with AAdvantage miles.

Bottom Line:

American Airlines appears to be restricting partner programs like Atmos Rewards and The British Airways Club from booking close-in nonstop saver awards within about 5 days of departure. For now, travelers can still access these flights using American AAdvantage miles, though that may mean paying higher award rates than partner programs would charge — if the flight were available that way.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines hasn’t said anything publicly yet, but it looks like partner airline programs may be losing access to some last-minute nonstop award flights — at least temporarily. If that sticks around, travelers who usually redeem points through programs like Atmos Rewards or The British Airways Club for American flights could end up paying a lot more for the exact same flight because there will be only 1 way to book these close-in awards.
