American Airlines is starting a new route from John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, to Miami, Florida, as part of an additional West Coast expansion with recent adds of Portland and Sacramento, thanks to a flag by aviation website Simple Flying. This new Orange County to Miami flight will complement multiple services out of Los Angeles.

New Route to Orange County

This route will start on January 8, 2024, and sales will start on Monday, September 4, 2023. The new route will be operated by a Boeing 737, with both first class and main cabin seats onboard.

The flight is nicely timed to operate during the daytime, unlike many flights that depart the West Coast for the other side.

While actual flight times have not been confirmed, the flight will depart Miami in the morning, arriving into Orange County before noon, and then almost immediately returning back to Miami a little after noon, arriving into Miami around 10:30 p.m. This is perfect for those who don’t want to be on a red-eye going back, and the arrival time still allows you to have nearly a full day in Orange County once you land.

While the route won’t be operated by any sort of premium aircraft like the flight from Orange County to New York City, it does offer a direct option from the wealthy suburbs of Los Angeles to the high-end capital of Florida without any connections — a valued option for many travelers.

American Airlines currently serves Austin (AUS), Charlotte (CLT), Chicago (ORD), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), New York (JFK), and Phoenix (PHX) out of Orange County (SNA).

Hot Tip:

This is likely going to be a route where many customers will purchase first class outright, so if you’re looking for an upgrade, you may want to find other ways of securing a seat up front. Check out our guide on how to upgrade on American Airlines.

Final Thoughts

This new option from Orange County to Miami will provide another way to get from the West Coast to the Eastern U.S. without a connection. Due to this, this flight will likely be busy with travelers paying a hefty fare for the nonstop route.
