American Airlines kept travelers guessing after teasing a mystery international route on social media. Now, the airline has made it official: nonstop service between Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Tokyo’s Narita (NRT) airport is returning beginning in 2027.

The announcement confirms what many aviation enthusiasts had already figured out after dissecting the airline’s Instagram teaser.

Here’s how the clues pointed to Japan long before American made it official.

The Clues Pointed Towards Tokyo

American Airlines posted a teaser on its Instagram account on Tuesday, June 30, hinting that a new route announcement from Chicago O’Hare (ORD) is coming soon.

Now, we know what the airline was teasing. American will launch daily nonstop service between Chicago (ORD) and Tokyo Narita (NRT) beginning March 27, 2027, marking its return to the route after a 7-year hiatus. The airline will operate the flight with a Boeing 787-9 in its standard configuration, featuring 30 Flagship Suite business class seats.

The airline did not reveal the destination in its teaser, but the image appeared to show Osaka Garden, the Japanese garden located in Chicago’s Jackson Park. That didn’t necessarily mean Osaka was the destination, but rather, it served as a broader clue pointing toward Japan.

That led many aviation experts and curious travelers to believe that American is preparing to announce new service between Chicago and Japan, with Chicago to Tokyo-Narita (NRT) looking like the most likely outcome, and they were right.

American previously operated Chicago to Tokyo (NRT) before suspending the route during the pandemic in 2020. Bringing Japan service back from Chicago gives the airline another long-haul option from one of its most important hubs while also giving Midwest travelers more ways to reach Japan without connecting elsewhere in the U.S.

There is also the Japan Airlines (JAL) factor. Besides being Oneworld alliance partners, American and JAL already have a joint business partnership across the Pacific, and the Japanese carrier currently serves the Chicago-to-Tokyo market. This new American route should complement that network and make it even easier for travelers to connect beyond Tokyo to other parts of Asia.

Japan remains one of the hottest international destinations for U.S. travelers, so a returning American Airlines route is a welcome addition — especially from travelers wanting to redeem AAdvantage miles.

Hot Tip:

Now that the route is official, it’s a good idea to check AAdvantage award availability soon. Airlines sometimes release saver-level award space when new routes go on sale, and the best seats can disappear quickly.

Final Thoughts

The return of American’s Chicago-to-Tokyo service is welcome news for travelers in the Midwest, especially those looking for another nonstop option to Japan. It also strengthens American’s transpacific network and gives AAdvantage members another opportunity to redeem miles on a high-demand international route.
