This winter, American Airlines will launch a unique new seasonal service that will surely be well-liked by tourists planning to visit the famous Grand Canyon National Park.

Starting October 12, 2024, there’ll be a new nonstop service between Los Angeles (LAX) and Flagstaff (FLG) — the gateway to the Grand Canyon.

Let’s take a look at the details.

Seasonal LAX to Flagstaff Service Coming This Winter

Despite Flagstaff being the closest airport to the Grand Canyon — one of America’s biggest tourist attractions — the airport only has nonstop service to 2 cities: Dallas (DFW) and Phoenix (PHX).

That’s about to change, at least for this winter, when American Airlines inaugurates service from Los Angeles (LAX) to Flagstaff.

American’s new service will operate once weekly on Saturdays from October 12 through March 29, 2025, with the following schedule:

  • Depart Los Angeles (LAX) 9:45 a.m. — Arrive Flagstaff (FLG) 12:22 p.m.
  • Depart Flagstaff (FLG) 5:30 p.m. — Arrive Los Angeles (LAX) 6:10 p.m.

The long gap between the aircraft’s arrival from LA and departure back from Flagstaff would suggest that the aircraft will operate at least 1 round-trip service to Phoenix which is only 25 minutes away.

American will deploy its fleet of Skywest Airlines-operated CRJ700 aircraft on the route. They only have between 63 and 73 seats with the main economy cabin in a 2-2 configuration. Up front in business, you’ll find 6 to 9 seats in a 1-2 configuration.

For a flight of around 90 minutes, the $553 economy round-trip price tag is pretty steep.

However, if you are looking for a winter adventure at the Grand Canyon, then you can always redeem AAdvantage Miles to book instead. One-way redemptions start at 7.5k miles + $5.60 in Main Cabin (economy) and 17.5k miles + $5.60 in First (domestic business class).

Hot Tip:

With fewer tourists and lower temperatures, visiting the Grand Canyon in fall and winter is a totally different experience to the popular spring and summer months.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines will be offering new nonstop service to Flagstaff this coming winter, providing convenient travel options for Californians and passengers on the West Coast.

The service is expected to attract a large number of outdoor enthusiasts who are planning to visit the famous Grand Canyon National Park. The winter seasonal service is perfect for travelers who prefer fewer crowds and lower temperatures, as well as those traveling from other countries and connecting on American Airlines or Oneworld airline flights at LAX.
