American Airlines has been on a Wi-Fi hot streak lately.

Earlier this year, the carrier became one of the first major U.S. airlines to offer free inflight Wi-Fi to loyalty members across the bulk of its fleet — finally catching up to the connectivity push we’ve seen from Delta and United. Now, American is going a step further.

The airline just announced it will install Starlink — SpaceX’s satellite internet service — on more than 500 narrowbody aircraft, beginning in the first quarter of 2027. The upgrade targets domestic and short-haul international routes.

Here’s what American flyers can expect from the upgrade.

The Evolution of American Airlines Wi-Fi

Back in January 2026, American Airlines launched free high-speed Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members across its narrowbody and dual-class regional fleets, sponsored by AT&T.

By early spring, the perk had extended to nearly every flight in the network. Members simply sign in with their AAdvantage credentials to access the connection at no charge. There’s no fee or subscription required.

The current system runs on Viasat and Intelsat satellite technology, covering roughly 90% of the fleet. Widebody international aircraft running Panasonic systems still require paid Wi-Fi for now.

It’s a solid foundation, but Viasat and Intelsat operate in geostationary orbit, which comes with inherent speed and latency ceilings. Put simply, the services are prone to outages and slowness. Those are exactly the problems Starlink solves.

Under the newly announced deal, American will roll Starlink out across its Airbus narrowbody fleet — including new A321XLR and A321neo deliveries — starting in Q1 2027.

The rollout covers more than 500 aircraft. No pricing details have been announced yet, which leaves the biggest question unanswered: Will free access for AAdvantage members carry over once Starlink hardware is installed, or will the upgrade come with a new pricing structure?

Hot Tip:

By looking at other airlines that offer Starlink, it’s unlikely that AA will make users pay to access the service. More likely, passengers will need to log in with their AAdvantage account number to access the inflight Wi-Fi for free.

Starlink is SpaceX’s satellite internet service, built around a constellation of thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Traditional aviation Wi-Fi relies on geostationary satellites orbiting roughly 22,000 miles above Earth — far enough that signal lag is noticeable, even on the best days. Starlink’s LEO satellites orbit at around 340 miles up, dramatically cutting latency and boosting speeds. Its Aero Terminal can support up to 1 Gbps per antenna.

That’s fast enough to handle streaming, video calls, and real-time collaboration tools without the stutter and dropped connections that passengers experience at altitude. Think of it as bringing your home broadband onto the plane.

American won’t be the first carrier to make this leap. Hawaiian Airlines led the way among major U.S. carriers, while United Airlines already has more than 300 aircraft equipped with Starlink and plans to surpass 800 by the end of 2026. Southwest Airlines is also rolling out Starlink on more than 300 planes by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Alaska Airlines says its entire fleet — regional, narrowbody, and widebody — should be fully equipped by 2027. Even semi-private carrier JSX has offered free Starlink on all flights for several years now.

International carriers are moving quickly, too. British Airways flew its first Starlink-equipped flight in March 2026, Emirates has started equipping its 777 fleet, and IAG is deploying Starlink across Aer Lingus, Iberia, Vueling, and its other carriers.

Final Thoughts

American’s Starlink deal is a clear sign the carrier is taking inflight connectivity seriously. Earlier this year, the carrier rolled out free Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members — a strong first step toward improving the onboard experience.

The big question now is whether American will keep that free access in place once Starlink launches. If it does, the airline stays competitive with rivals already moving in the same direction. If not, passengers may not be thrilled about paying again after getting a taste of complimentary connectivity.

Either way, the broader picture is encouraging. American is continuing to invest in the passenger experience at a time when travelers have more airline choices than ever. We’ll be watching closely as the rollout begins next year.
