British Airways is making a big move to upgrade its inflight Wi-Fi; it plans to bring free Starlink connectivity across its fleet. The rollout is already underway, with the first aircraft now equipped and more installations on the way.

That puts the airline on par with a growing number of carriers investing in faster, more reliable internet. Best of all, it will be free for everyone onboard.

Here’s what you need to know.

British Airways has confirmed that its first aircraft fitted with Starlink is a Boeing 787-8, signaling the official start of its fleetwide upgrade. While the airline had previously said installations would begin in 2026, this update shows things are moving forward and the plan is sticking.

The 787-8 is expected to lead the rollout, notably bringing connectivity to aircraft that previously lacked onboard Wi-Fi. Other aircraft types should follow, though British Airways hasn’t outlined a detailed timeline for the broader installation yet.

Starlink, powered by SpaceX, uses low-Earth orbit satellites to deliver faster speeds and lower latency than traditional inflight Wi-Fi systems. In practical terms, that means a more reliable connection from gate to gate — even on long-haul flights over oceans or remote areas.

Passengers can expect to connect multiple devices — including phones, tablets, and laptops — with enough bandwidth for streaming, browsing, messaging, and even getting some work done.

British Airways says the new Starlink Wi-Fi will be completely free for all passengers with no login or loyalty membership required. that’s a shift from its current paid Wi-Fi model while also delivering faster, more reliable connectivity.

Hot Tip:

Don’t assume you’ll have free Starlink Wi-Fi just yet. The rollout is only beginning, so checking your aircraft type before booking or at check-in is the best way to know what kind of connectivity to expect on board.

Final Thoughts

British Airways had already hinted that Starlink was coming, and now it’s actually happening. With the first aircraft already equipped, the airline is starting to bring faster, more reliable Wi-Fi across its fleet.

As more planes get upgraded, passengers will begin to see some of the fastest inflight internet available today. The best part? It’ll be free.

It will take some time to roll out across the entire fleet, but the move toward free, high-speed Wi-Fi is clearly underway at BA.
