Renting a car can be expensive, but there’s a new Amex Offer that will save you $90 on any Hertz rental that is $350 or more. This can be a considerable amount of savings, though there is a drawback to using an American Express card to rent a vehicle.

Amex Offers

Amex Offers provide a statement credit for a specific amount when you spend a designated amount at a listed merchant. Each card in your account may be targeted for different stores or amounts, so you’ll want to scroll through all of your cards to see what you’re eligible for or which card may be best for the savings.

In the case of this Hertz offer, if you are targeted on the American Express® Green Card, you’ll want to add it to that card since it earns 3x Membership Rewards points on travel, which includes rental cars.

The Offer

This offer expires on December 31, 2023, and requires you to spend more than $350 with Hertz, where you’ll then get $90 as a statement credit. With Amex Offers, you can spend in multiple transactions, so this $350 doesn’t necessarily need to be spent all at once.

However, Amex cards don’t typically come with primary rental car insurance, so if you add on Amex Premium Protection, this will be an extra cost of $12.25 to $24.95 for each rental period, potentially negating any savings. You’ll want to do the math to see what makes sense for you.

Your rental must be from a Hertz corporately owned location (such as an airport location). The rental has to be paid by December 31, 2023, so this would mean your rental needs to be returned several days prior, leaving plenty of time for the charge to post onto your card. Lastly, you need to make your reservation directly with Hertz instead of another website or third party.

Hot Tip:

Final Thoughts

With the price of rental cars going up, this is a timely offer to save $90 on your next set of Hertz rentals totaling more than $350. See if it makes sense to charge your rental to your American Express card or if charging to a different card that provides primary rental car protection would be better.
