Update:The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

Amtrak is running a really unique sale where you can travel in a Roomette on any of Amtrak’s long-distance trains and have a free companion. You can ride in Amtrak’s highest class of service for less, allowing you to see more of the country in comfort!

Let’s take a closer look at this deal.

What Is an Amtrak Roomette?

This sale is valid for travel in one of Amtrak’s Roomettes, an onboard private berth for relaxing during the day and sleeping at night on long-distance trains.

There are basically 2 types of accommodations onboard: a bedroom and a roomette. A bedroom is a larger sleeping area with a larger bed, sitting chair, and in-room bathroom, whereas a roomette is the smallest type of room without an in-unit bathroom. In either case, accommodations have beds for sleep at night and include all meals — a necessity if you’re on the train for multiple days.

Amtrak’s Sale on Roomettes

The sale is valid for booking through December 8, 2023. You can travel anytime from January 3, 2024, through March 27, 2024, and Amtrak explicitly says there are no blackout dates, which is terrific.

You can book 1 of 2 ways:

  • Visit Amtrak.com/RoomSale
  • Use the Amtrak app and type in promo code C103 when booking.

The sale is valid on these trains only: California Zephyr, Capitol Limited, Cardinal, City of New Orleans, Coast Starlight, Crescent, Empire Builder, Lake Shore Limited, Silver Meteor, Silver Star, Southwest Chief, Sunset Limited, and Texas Eagle.

Amtrak has identified several example 1-way fares, good for 2 people:

The pricing for Roomettes is a bit unique. Basically, it combines the cost of 2 coach fares with a single accommodation charge. If you’re 1 traveler, you pay the coach fare and the accommodation charge, but to add a second passenger, you’d normally just need to pay the additional coach fare without an extra accommodation charge.

This sale waves that second coach fare but still keeps the 1 accommodation charge.

Hot Tip:

When booking long-distance trains, it’s always worth pointing out that you should allow plenty of pad after your arrival time in case the train is delayed as Amtrak long-distance trains are notorious for running late.

Final Thoughts

Amtrak savings in Roomettes can be tough to come by, so if you’re flexible to take a trip this winter or early spring, this can be a terrific sale to take advantage of. Best of all, you can take a companion with you at no extra cost!
