Traveling with Avelo Airlines? Bringing some wine home? If that’s you, good news: Avelo Airlines is expanding its “Wine Travels Free” program to the entire western U.S.

What does this mean for travelers? Let’s take a look.

Avelo Airlines Expanding ‘Wine Travels Free’ Program

Starting on September 16, 2024, every Avelo Airlines passenger flying to or from the West Coast will be able to check in a case of wine at no cost. This applies to 14 different airports, ranging from Kalispell, Montana (FCA) to Palm Springs, California (PSP) and a dozen airports in between.

As part of their checked baggage allowance on Avelo flights, customers aged 21 and above can transport a case of wine (1 per person) at no additional cost. What counts as a case of wine? A single box or case with up to 12 bottles and weighing no more than 50 pounds.

“Originally launched at our base in Sonoma County, the Wine Travels Free program has been a success, garnering appreciation from our Customers. Now, wine lovers throughout the Western U.S. – from the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma to wineries in Oregon, Washington and beyond – can take advantage of our program. We’re making it easier than ever to share your love for wine with family and friends or to
simply bring a taste of your favorite Avelo West Coast destination home.”

-Avelo Airlines Founder and CEO Andrew Levy

Avelo requires passengers to follow packing guidelines for their wines, using a protective case or box with sufficient packing materials inside to ensure the wine bottles aren’t damaged during the flight. Avelo Airlines employees will not have packaging materials on hand at the airport, so customers need to take care to pack properly before arriving at the airport.

On arrival at the airport and as part of the check-in process, customers will present their case of wine as they would normally present checked luggage for transport with Avelo.

Final Thoughts

Soon, Avelo Airlines passengers on the West Coast will be able to check a case of wine at no extra cost. This is an expansion of the airline’s “Wine Travels Free” program. With a few minor rules to note, this program is likely to make customers happy, saving them on shipping fees after a trip to a winery.
