For some travelers, visiting the largest country in South America will now cost an additional $80.

As of today, April 10, 2025, Australian, Canadian, and U.S. citizens are now required to present a visa to enter Brazil.

The new rule applies to all travel booked before today, April 10, so if you have a trip planned to Brazil, you’ll need to get your visa application processed before you travel.

Here’s everything you need to know before heading to Brazil.

U.S. Citizens Now Need a Visa To Enter Brazil

Brazil previously required travel visas for U.S. nationals. However, the requirements were dropped several years ago in the hope that the U.S. would also drop its visa requirements for Brazilian citizens.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Brazil’s government has been indicating since 2022 that it would reimplement visa requirements for U.S. citizens — which has finally happened.

All citizens of Australia, Canada, and the U.S. now need to present a valid visa to enter Brazil by air, land, or sea, including tourists holding these passports.

Luckily, Brazil has set up an eVisa program, which allows faster processing and negates the need to visit a Brazilian consulate or the embassy.

You can apply for Brazil’s eVisa if you meet the following criteria:

  • You only intend to travel to Brazil as a visitor
  • You will not remain in the country for more than 90 days
  • You’re an Australian, Canadian, or U.S. passport holder

Applying is straightforward. All you need to do is visit this page, where you’ll create an account and submit the required information and documentation. Then, you’ll pay the fee, which is $80 plus a processing fee of $0.90. The visa will be valid for 1 year and allows multiple entries into Brazil during that time.

After you’ve paid the fee, you’ll receive a confirmation email for your submission. The eVisa’s website notes that the average processing time is 5 days, though it’s entirely possible you’ll receive a confirmation, a denial, or a request for more information sooner than that.

Once your application is approved, you’ll receive a PDF file containing your visa. Note that you must print your eVisa and present it at the airport before departure. Otherwise, you’ll be denied boarding. The site says you should also keep it handy for presentation upon arrival.

Final Thoughts

Brazil now requires visas for U.S. citizens to enter the country. Fortunately, an eVisa program makes acquiring the necessary visa much easier than in the past.

If you have a trip planned to Brazil, make sure you’re well aware of these new requirements — and don’t forget to print your eVisa so you can provide it before departure and upon landing in Brazil!
