“Oops” seems to be what’s happening here.

If you have status with The British Airways Club, you may have found find a surprise waiting for you earlier this week.

Some members received emails stating that their elite status had been renewed without requiring them to fly more or meet the usual requirements. It was a surprising move, especially at a time when qualifying for status has become more challenging for many travelers.

Now, some — but not all — of those members have received a new email saying the extension was revoked. And there wasn’t much clarity around this process.

Here’s what you need to know.

What To Know About British Airways Club Status Extensions

British Airways recently extended elite status for select British Airways Club members — even if they didn’t earn enough Tier Points to requalify.

Reports from travelers indicate that status is being renewed for another year, in some cases despite limited or no qualifying activity over the past 12 months.

At Upgraded Points, our own contributor Daniel Ross also received one of these notifications.

Despite earning well below the 7,500 Tier Points typically required for Silver status, his tier was extended for another membership year. In some cases, members say they had minimal — or even no — qualifying activity credited to their accounts over the past 12 months.

Now, shortly after making a lot of customers happy, British Airways is emailing people saying the extension was a mistake and that it was reversed. To be clear, not everyone who received this extension had it revoked. Daniel was lucky enough to not have his status extension canceled, but other travelers weren’t so lucky.

This move comes after British Airways rolled out major changes to its loyalty program in 2025, rebranding it as “The Club” and adjusting how members earn and maintain status. Since then, the airline has introduced a number of tweaks and bonuses aimed at making the program more competitive and accessible.

It’s not entirely clear how British Airways is deciding who gets an extension, who doesn’t, and which extensions were canceled.

For now, the extension doesn’t appear to be offered across the board, so not everyone should expect one. However, it’s still worth checking your inbox for any messages from the U.K. carrier.

Hot Tip:

If your British Airways status is up for renewal soon, keep an eye on your inbox. You may receive an extension even if you didn’t quite hit the required Tier Points.

Final Thoughts

British Airways recently extended elite status for some members who didn’t requalify for their desired tier. That made these travelers happy.

Then, in a surprising move, the carrier has canceled the extension for some members, emailing them just a few days later with a “just kidding” message. This is creating a lot of confusion and frustration for travelers.

For now, it’s worth monitoring your account and emails closely to see what British Airways is telling you. Hopefully, it won’t change again next week.
