U.S. fintech company Cardless, which only began issuing credit cards a few years ago, has changed a rule that annoyed many applicants and points and miles collectors. Cardless has finally decided to scrap the prohibition on having more than 1 card per lifetime.

There are still some rules to follow when applying for a card issued by Cardless, though.

Let’s take a look at what’s changed.

The New Cardless Rules for Card Applications

Cardless appeared on the U.S. credit card market a few years ago with the launch of co-branded sports team cards, such as the Boston Celtics. However, those sports-themed cards were closed earlier this year, with Cardless deciding to shut down user accounts unilaterally.

With that once-in-a-lifetime rule in place, anybody who had one of those shuttered cards could not apply for any other card issued by Cardless. This was annoying because Cardless has a lineup of co-branded airline cards, which, unlike the sports ones, have a clear value proposition for U.S.-based travelers.

This has changed now, as first reported by Travel on Points.

We now support opening a second Cardless card. You’re welcome to apply and be considered for another card,” a Cardless spokesperson said in an emailed statement confirming the news.

There are some rules that Cardless specified when applying for another card:

  • You must wait 60 days after your most recent card approval
  • You must wait 45 days after a card decline
  • You can only have 1 card per brand
  • You cannot already have the same card

It’s not entirely clear whether this means that a person can apply for more than a second card, i.e., a third or more. Cardless does have more than 1 line of co-branded cards, which could make applying for several attractive.

Specifically, these are the co-branded airline cards issued by Cardless:

Hot Tip:

If the new application rules from Cardless have you thinking of applying for a card, keep in mind that Chase’s 5/24 rule still applies. Chase will not approve you for any of its cards if you have already opened 5 (or more) credit card accounts in the last 24 months, with a few exceptions. If you’re considering getting a Chase card and a Cardless one, do the math to see if you’d exceed the limit with Chase and make yourself ineligible.

Final Thoughts

Fintech company Cardless, issuer of several co-branded airline credit cards on the U.S. market, had a rule since its debut that you could only apply for 1 of its cards in your lifetime. This was possibly the most restrictive card application rule in the U.S., but it has now gone away.

Cardless will let you apply for at least another card. Given the company’s relatively vast lineup of co-branded credit cards, spanning 4 different airlines, this is a very welcome development.
