Insurance is something you should have but hope you never need. That’s true for personal injuries and damage to your smartphone.

Many credit cards offer phone insurance plans, unlocked by paying your monthly phone bill with the card and then getting coverage for damage to or theft of your phone. That’s pretty nice, considering how expensive phones are these days.

Unfortunately, the Chase Freedom Flex® will leave the list of credit cards offering this benefit. Coverage runs through mid-September, and then it’s going away.

If you’re using the Freedom Flex card to pay your phone bill and get automatic protection, here’s what you should know about the impending change.

Chase Freedom Flex Card Ending Cell Phone Protection

The Freedom Flex card has updated its cardholder benefits guide to say cell phone protection is being removed from the card, effective September 20, 2026. Coverage will apply through September 19, as first flagged by Doctor of Credit.

The Freedom Flex card has a quality list of benefits for a card with no annual fee. Through September 19, cardholders can receive damage and theft protection for cell phones when paying the entire monthly cell phone bill with this card. There’s a $50 deductible for approved claims, and the maximum payout per claim is $800 — up to 2 claims per 12-month period for a total of $1,000 per 12-month period.

Note that this is supplemental coverage in addition to any other policies you have, such as your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policies.

There are exclusions under this policy, including dead batteries and cosmetic damage.

Other Credit Card Options for Cell Phone Protection

Luckily, the Freedom Flex card isn’t the only credit card that offers cell phone insurance when you use it to pay your phone bill. The bad news, though, is that there aren’t many cards offering built-in phone insurance without an annual fee.

The Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card has a $0 annual fee and provides coverage up to $600 per claim with a maximum of 2 claims in a 12-month period — up to $1,200 total, and there’s a $25 deductible.

The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card is another option, and it also has a $0 annual fee. This card provides up to $600 of coverage per claim, up to 2 claims per 12-month period, with a $25 deductible per claim.

These cards — and others with cell phone insurance — require paying your full monthly cell phone bill with the card to activate the coverage.

Final Thoughts

On September 20, 2026, the Freedom Flex card will remove cell phone protection from its list of benefits. If you’ve been paying your monthly phone bill with this card to get automatic protection at no extra cost, you’ll need to figure out a new plan.

Claims will only be honored through September 19 on this benefit.
