When the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card launched in July 2025, its 6x dining rate caught my attention right away. That rate comes through Citi Nights, which limits the bonus to Friday and Saturday evenings.

My family of 5 includes 2 adults and 3 children. We dine out most weekends and order from plenty of restaurants, too. Earning 6 ThankYou Points per $1 on those purchases sounded like a good way to earn a lot of points.

Then I started paying attention to when we actually eat. We might order sushi at 5 p.m. on a Friday, go out for an early Saturday dinner with the kids, or have brunch on Sunday. Those are all restaurant purchases, but none earn 6x with Citi Nights.

The 6x timing is the one thing I’d change about the card. The dining rate is excellent when I can get it, but I don’t want to plan dinner around it.

The Citi Strata Elite card earns 6 ThankYou Points per $1 at restaurants, including restaurant delivery services, during Citi Nights. That’s Friday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday, and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday, Eastern time.

Restaurant purchases outside those windows earn 3 points per $1. Citi’s terms say the time the purchase is authorized determines whether it qualifies.

Earning 6x on dining out is a terrific return for a family of 5. A dinner can earn lots of ThankYou Points quickly, and I can redeem them for travel. That was a big part of the appeal when I got the card.

Our Dinner Plans Rarely Follow Citi’s Schedule

The issue is that our restaurant spending doesn’t consistently happen on Friday or Saturday night after 6 p.m.

Friday takeout is a good example. We order from our local sushi spot every week, and everyone’s usually hungry well before 6 p.m. I typically place the order around 5 or 5:15 p.m. so we can eat by 6 p.m. I earn 3x with the Citi Strata Elite card on my sushi order.

Could I wait an hour or so to earn 6x? Sure, but that’s a strange way to decide when my family eats dinner, and it’s not a lifestyle change I’m willing to make for a few extra points.

Saturday isn’t much different. An early reservation often works better when we’re going out with the kids, especially our 4-year-old. Sunday brunch, which is one of our favorite ways to dine out, falls outside the Citi Nights window altogether. So does a Sunday dinner or takeout on a weeknight.

Of course, I sometimes eat after 6 p.m. on a Friday or Saturday. If that’s when we’re going anyway, I’m happy to earn 6x. I’ve just found that it happens less often than I expected when I first saw the benefit.

I have more than 25 credit cards, and I’m used to remembering which one earns more on groceries, gas, travel, and dining, as well as the credits and rotating categories I actually use. But adding the time of day I have to order dinner is one more thing to think about when I’m trying to pay the bill or feed my family.

Someone who regularly goes out on Friday and Saturday evenings could get a lot more from Citi Nights than I do. I’m sure there are cardholders whose dining habits line up almost perfectly with it, but mine don’t.

Why the Amex Gold Card Works Better for My Dining Habits

I already had the American Express® Gold Card when I got the Citi Strata Elite card, and I initially put it aside for dining. In theory, earning 6x instead of 4x on dining purchases was an easy choice. I’ve since gone back to the Amex Gold card for most restaurant purchases.

It earns 4 Membership Rewards points per $1 at restaurants worldwide on up to $50,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1x thereafter. I can use it for an early Friday dinner, Saturday lunch takeout, or Sunday brunch without having to watch the clock. Eligible restaurant takeout and delivery purchases in the U.S. count, too.

The Amex Gold card also earns 4x at U.S. supermarkets on up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1x thereafter. Between dining out and buying groceries for 5 people, those are 2 everyday categories I spend the most on.

Membership Rewards points are valuable, but this isn’t really about whether 4x Amex Membership Rewards points beat 6x Citi ThankYou points. If I earn the full 6x on dining purchases, I’m thrilled. If Citi offered that earning rate at any time, the Citi Strata Elite card would be my clear choice for restaurant spending. It would be hard to pass up for anyone who dines out or orders takeout often.

But with the limited window, the Amex Gold card works better for me because I can count on its restaurant rate whenever we decide to eat.

Hot Tip:

If you’re using the Citi Strata Elite card for Citi Nights, pay attention to when the restaurant authorizes the charge. Citi says that time determines whether you earn 6x, even if the purchase posts to your account later. The window runs on Eastern time, which is also useful to keep in mind when you’re traveling.

What I’d Change About Citi Nights

I’d make the 6x earning rate on Citi Nights available all weekend, including Sundays. The current window doesn’t align with how many households eat. Families may order takeout before 6 p.m., go out for an early dinner, or meet for Sunday brunch. Those purchases all earn just 3x.

Even moving the start time from 6 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays would make a difference for us, and I’m likely not the only cardholder who feels that way. Adding Sunday would help even more.

As Citi Nights works now, I’d have to plan our meals around the bonus window to get the card’s best dining rate, and that’s too limiting for a card I’d otherwise use regularly.

Final Thoughts

I liked Citi Nights enough to try making the Citi Strata Elite card my go-to dining card. After more than a year, I’ve found that too many of our meals fall outside its 6x window. I’ll take the extra points when our plans line up, but most of the time I reach for my Amex Gold card.
