Got some Delta SkyMiles sitting in your account? You now have another way to spend them, and it has nothing to do with booking a flight.

Delta Air Lines is letting SkyMiles members redeem their miles for streaming and digital subscriptions — including Paramount+, FOX One, and The Wall Street Journal — starting at 15,000 miles.

It might sound like a decent way to use a smaller balance, but once you do the math, we think you should hang on to those miles.

Delta Adds Streaming and News Subscriptions as SkyMiles Redemption Options

Delta has rolled out a new subscription redemption portal where SkyMiles members can trade their miles for entertainment and news subscriptions.

A 12-month Paramount+ subscription will cost you 15,000 SkyMiles, while a year of The Wall Street Journal costs 25,000 miles. If you’re interested in FOX One, you can redeem 15,000 miles for 6 months or 20,000 miles for a full year. Delta also lists The New York Times as coming soon, though there’s no word yet on how many miles that subscription will cost.

In most cases, redeeming SkyMiles for streaming subscriptions offers poor value. Screenshot: Delta Air Lines website

So, are any of these worth it? Let’s look at the numbers.

Take Paramount+, for example. An annual Premium subscription normally costs around $140. If you redeem 15,000 SkyMiles instead, you’re getting roughly 0.93 cents per mile. That’s not a great return, especially considering that we value Delta SkyMiles at around 1.2 cents each. Based on that valuation, those same 15,000 miles are worth about $180 toward travel.

And keep in mind that streaming services regularly offer promotions and discounted subscriptions, meaning you might be able to pay even less out of pocket. While having another way to use your miles isn’t necessarily a bad thing, unless you’re sitting on a stash of miles with no plans to use them, these redemptions are tough to justify.

Hot Tip:

In most cases, you’re better off redeeming SkyMiles for flights and instead using a credit card that offers streaming credits or bonus rewards. Check out our guide to the best credit cards for streaming services to see how you can save on subscriptions you’re already paying for.

Final Thoughts

For most travelers, we’d suggest passing on these redemptions. Your SkyMiles will likely go further toward a flight than another year of streaming.

It’s always nice to have more ways to redeem your miles, especially if you’re not planning to fly anytime soon. But when it comes to redeeming 15,000 to 25,000 SkyMiles for a streaming or news subscription, you’re much better off saving those miles and finding discounts or paying cash for your streaming service.
