Streaming services have become an important element in our lives. Whether listening to premium radio programing while driving, checking out a movie in the evening, or catching up on current news, chances are you’ve enjoyed at least 1 streaming service.

According to Statista, a leading provider of market and consumer data, a recent survey showed that 78% of households were using streaming services. Netflix alone had over 60 million subscribers just in the U.S., and it’s safe to say these levels could continue or even increase.

If you’re a household spending a lot on streaming services, you may be interested in finding the best credit cards for earning rewards on those purchases, and that’s what we’re here to talk about today.

If you’re paying for streaming services, there’s a way to earn bonus rewards — and we’re happy to show you how. Let’s take a look at which cards offer bonus earnings for this ongoing expense.

What Qualifies as Streaming Services?

Several credit cards offer elevated earnings on streaming services purchases.

The list of which streaming services qualify for direct-purchase bonus earnings, however, differs by the credit card issuer. We’ll cover additional definitions later for other card issuers, but we’ve chosen to start with the list published by American Express, as it is the most extensive.

Here’s the American Express list of qualifying streaming services providers for elevated earnings on American Express-issued cards:

  • Amazon Music Unlimited
  • Apple Music
  • Apple TV+
  • AT&T TV Now
  • Audible
  • CBS All Access
  • Disney+
  • ESPN+
  • Fubo TV
  • HBO Max
  • HBO Now
  • Hulu
  • iHeartRadio
  • Kindle Unlimited
  • Luminary
  • MLB.TV
  • NBA League Pass
  • Netflix
  • NHL.TV
  • Pandora
  • Prime Video
  • Showtime
  • Sling TV
  • Sirius XM Streaming and Satellite
  • Spotify
  • Stitcher
  • YouTube Music Premium
  • YouTube Premium
  • YouTube TV

It’s worth noting that if your subscription to any of these services is bundled with other products and/or services or is billed by a third party, your purchase may not be eligible for bonus earnings.

Bottom Line: Each credit card that offers bonus earnings on the direct purchase of streaming services will have its own criteria or list of which services count as qualifying purchases.

Best Amex Cards for Streaming Services

There are different options for securing bonus earnings on streaming services. You can purchase the services directly with the streaming services provider or you may be able to purchase streaming services gift cards from a qualifying bonus category merchant.

We’re going to look at several Amex-issued cards that offer 1 or both of these earning options.

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

We like that this card packs multiple options for earning rewards on U.S. streaming services. You’ll earn 6% cash-back in the form of Blue Cash Rewards Dollars for every dollar you spend directly on qualifying services.

You’ll also earn 6% cash-back when shopping at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year, 1% thereafter). Many grocery stores sell streaming services gift cards, such as those for Netflix, Hulu, and many others.

Additional Card Benefits

  • Secondary car rental insurance with the option to purchase premium protection for a low fee that covers the entire rental period
  • Shopping benefits such as purchase protection, return protection, and extended warranty

While the Amex Gold card does not offer direct bonus earnings for streaming services (just 1x earnings per dollar spent), you will earn 4x Membership Rewards points at U.S. supermarkets, up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year (1x thereafter). Many supermarkets sell streaming services gift cards.

Additional Card Benefits

  • Secondary car rental insurance with the option to purchase premium protection for a low fee that covers the entire rental period
  • Shopping benefits such as purchase protection, return protection, and extended warranty

Once again, with the Hilton Surpass card, you have the opportunity to earn big on streaming services when purchasing corresponding gift cards at bonus-earning merchants. The Hilton Surpass card earns 6x Hilton Honors points at U.S. supermarkets and, as we mentioned previously, many supermarkets allow you to purchase gift cards with a credit card.

Additionally, the card earns 3x points on all purchases, including streaming services.

Additional Card Benefits

  • Complimentary Hilton Honors Gold status; earn Diamond status by spending $40,000 on the card in a calendar year

Final Thoughts

If you’re currently spending a lot on streaming services, it can make sense to ensure that those purchases are made with a card that earns rewards.

Unless you’re spending an inordinate amount on these services, however, it may not be prudent to select a card based solely on earning rewards for streaming services purchases.

A productive exercise can be to list all of your ongoing expenses, then select a card that will reward your largest purchases, has an annual fee you feel comfortable paying, offers redemptions that you find valuable, and includes benefits you will use.

Keep in mind that a single card may not cover all those bases, but you can get close.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best credit card for streaming services?

The best card for streaming services may not be the card that rewards those purchases directly.

Cards such as the Amex Blue Cash Preferred card offer 6x earnings on those purchases, but there are cards that offer unlimited earnings at bonus category merchants that sell streaming services gift cards.

The card that is best for your streaming services purchases will depend on your mix of spending, whether you want to pay an annual fee, and how much you value card-provided benefits.

What counts as streaming services?

Each credit card that offers bonus earnings on streaming services will have its own qualifying list of the services that are eligible.

For example, leading issuers Amex and Chase each publish a list of specific eligible streaming service providers.

How do Amex Offers work?

If you have an Amex-issued card, you may have Amex Offers that can save you money or provide bonus earnings. The offers are located in your online account and can be accessed by logging in and scrolling down to Amex Offers and Benefits.

Select the offer you wish to use and add it to your card. Use that card to make the eligible purchase and receive the statement credit or bonus earnings.

How do Chase Offers work?

When you log into your Chase-issued card account, even your debit card account, you will find offers from which you can select.

Add the offer to your card, make the purchase with the corresponding card, and receive a subsequent statement credit.

Each card can offer a unique set of offers and new offers are added on a regular basis.
