Update:

The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

American Airlines has launched an interesting, targeted promotion that allows select AAdvantage members to earn Loyalty Points when booking award tickets. Here’s a look at the details of the latest promotion and how to check if you’re eligible.

Promotion Details

As a reminder, AAdvantage award miles are what you use to book award tickets with American Airlines and its partners, while Loyalty Points help you qualify for higher levels of American AAdvantage elite status.

Usually, you’ll only earn AAdvantage Loyalty Points on cash tickets with American Airlines and its partners, along with other Loyalty Point-earning activities. However, with this targeted promotion, you can earn Loyalty Points for award bookings at one of the following rates:

  • 50 Loyalty Points per 1,000 AAdvantage miles redeemed
  • 100 Loyalty Points per 1,000 AAdvantage miles redeemed
promotion to earn Loyalty Points on mileage redemption flights

To check if your AAdvantage account has been targeted for the promotion, simply log in to your account and navigate to the Promotions tab.

Here are the terms of the promotion to be aware of:

  • You must register and book travel by October 7, 2024, at 11:59 PM CST.
  • All travel must be completed by December 31, 2024.
  • Only award travel on American and American Eagle will qualify.
  • You can earn a maximum of 20,000 Loyalty Points during the promotion.
  • All bonus Loyalty Points earned will post within 6 to 8 weeks of completing any eligible activity.
  • Only flights booked after registration will qualify.
Hot Tip:

Wondering how to earn American Airlines elite status? We can teach you!

Is It Worth It?

Should you take advantage of this offer? Absolutely, as long as it aligns with your travel plans.

If you want to earn more Loyalty Points by the end of the year and are targeted, enrolling for earnings on flights you’ll take anyway makes sense. But should you book flights you weren’t planning to take, just because of the option to earn more Loyalty Points? Probably not.

The value you place on trading 1,000 AAdvantage miles for 50 or 100 Loyalty Points will be subjective, and that value will probably change depending on how many more Loyalty Points you need to earn over the next few months to meet your status goals. There are other methods for earning Loyalty Points, but this promotion can help if you’ve exhausted those — or be a nice gift if it aligns with flights you’d take anyway, even without the offer.

Final Thoughts

This is an interesting promotion for those who are targeted, especially if you were planning on booking some award tickets for travel through the end of the year. Now, you can earn Loyalty Points toward elite status with your redemption flights.

Additionally, Delta and United already count all award flights toward elite status, so this promotion could be American’s way of testing the waters before rolling out a similar offering to all members in the future.
