Conflict in the Middle East has impacted travel worldwide, not least for airlines based in the region.

With thousands of flights cancelled, Abu Dhabi-based Etihad is one of the most affected airlines. As the airline slowly expands its flight schedule, it’s offering its loyal Etihad Guest members a shortcut to the next status level.

“Your relationship with Etihad means a great deal to us, and in moments like this, it is important that we stand behind that relationship,” wrote Arik De, chief revenue and commercial offer at Etihad, in an email to Etihad Guest members.

Let’s take a look at the details.

Etihad Eases Requirements To Earn Status

For the next year, Etihad is reducing the number of Tier Miles required to earn and retain Etihad Guest status by 25%. The reduction also applies to the number of Tier Miles that need to be earned by flying. As a reminder, Tier Miles can be earned in multiple ways, but earning Etihad Guest elite status requires a minimum number of Tier Miles to be earned from actual flying.

Only Etihad Guest members who had Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum status as of March 18, 2026, are eligible to enjoy the 25% reduction until March 31, 2027. Bronze status is granted to anyone who signs up for an Etihad Guest account, so the 25% reduction in elite-status requirements applies to everyone with an account.

The number of Tier Miles needed is detailed in the tables below. It’s worth noting that no reduction in Tier Miles will be applied to Etihad Guest’s top-tier Emerald status.

When Having Etihad Status Makes Sense

Etihad has been busy expanding its route network to offer flights to both popular and niche destinations worldwide.

This includes new destinations in North America, such as Atlanta (ATL), Calgary (YYC), and Charlotte (CLT), making Etihad a great option when planning trips to Asia or Africa from the U.S.

Here’s an example of what the 25% reduction in Tier Miles means in practice. Let’s say you’re based on the East Coast, and you already have Silver status. Under the terms of the new status requirements, you’ll need 15,000 Tier Miles to retain Silver status until March 31, 2027.

Booking a round-trip economy Value ticket from New York (JFK) to Colombo, Sri Lanka (CMB) would earn 3,238 Tier Miles each way. That’s a total of 6,476 Tier Miles — almost half the required amount to retain Silver.

Now, let’s say you signed up for Etihad Guest and are currently sitting on the bottom Bronze rung of elite status. The new requirement to move up to Silver status is 18,750 Tier Miles. That means booking just one round-trip business class Value ticket from New York to Colombo would catapult you to Silver status.

That said, the high-value perks of Eithad Guest are unlocked only with Gold status. These include priority boarding, global business class check-in, priority baggage, and fast-track immigration. However, Silver status holders can choose 2 of the following custom benefits, which include lounge access:

  • Business class lounge for status holders (in Abu Dhabi only)
  • Free economy standard seat selection
  • 2 Reward Shop vouchers
  • Up to 10% off baggage fees

Business class lounge access comes as a custom benefit at the Gold level.

Final Thoughts

Etihad Guest is a loyalty program known for engaging its members and rewarding frequent flyers fairly.

Reducing elite-status thresholds by 25% speaks to that commitment, especially at a time when many Etihad Guest members might have had to cancel travel plans, missing out on valuable Tier Miles that would have helped them earn or retain their status.

If you travel frequently from the U.S. to Asia or Africa, this could be a good time to start chasing Etihad Guest status.
