We finally know the first international destination to which American Airlines will fly its new game-changer Airbus A321XLR: It’s Edinburgh, Scotland (EDI).

American called the Airbus A321XLR “the right aircraft” to launch the route, which will begin in early March.

“With the game-changing Airbus A321XLR now in our fleet, we could not be more excited to connect the Big Apple with Auld Reekie,” said Brian Znotins, senior vice president of network and schedule planning at American Airlines.

Let’s take a look at the new route, what you can expect onboard, and how to book.

Seasonal Service Begins in March

American Airlines announced on October 30 that it would expand its international network with a new seasonal route between New York (JFK) and Edinburgh, Scotland (EDI).

American will fly the route once daily between March 8 and October 24, 2026. The new flights will join American’s existing Philadelphia (PHL) to Edinburgh route.

That’s exciting in itself, but what makes the news even more interesting is the aircraft American will fly on the route: the brand-new Airbus A321XLR.

As we’ve covered extensively, the Airbus A321XLR (which stands for “Xtra Long Range”) is the beginning of a new era in long-range narrow-body aircraft. The 3-cabin aircraft features 20 Flagship Business suites, 12 premium economy seats, and a refreshed economy cabin with 123 seats.

If you don’t want to wait until March to fly the Airbus A321XLR, you’re in luck. American’s first A321XLR flight will take off on December 18, 2025, as flight AA3 from New York to Los Angeles (LAX). However, tickets aren’t cheap.

Bottom Line:

American isn’t the only U.S. airline investing in Airbus A321XLR jets. United Airlines is set to fly the aircraft next year, albeit with a much smaller Polaris business class cabin.

How To Book

Unfortunately, tickets for the new route are not yet on sale. When they do become available, you’ll be able to book via aa.com or through American’s mobile app.

While we don’t have a sense of how much awards (or cash tickets) will cost, this is a good opportunity to get some AAdvantage miles in your account so you’ll be ready. Earning AAdvantage miles is pretty straightforward. You can do so by flying on American, through credit card welcome bonuses, the AAdvantage eShopping portal, and more.

Final Thoughts

We’re pretty pleased with this news. You’ll soon get to enjoy 9 hours on American’s new Airbus A321XLR jet, thanks to a new route from New York to Scotland launching next year. While we don’t yet know how much flights will cost, based on costs for the JFK-LAX route launching in December, expect to pay a pretty penny.
