Getting through security at London Heathrow’s Terminal 3 should soon be more streamlined than ever before.

From October 3, 2023, the U.K.’s largest and busiest airport started trialing a booking system that allows select passengers departing from Terminal 3 to elect a set time to pass through security.

“Everyone is familiar with airport security, but at Heathrow, we’re constantly thinking of innovative ways to boost the safety and streamline the experience for our passengers,” said Mark Powell, Operational Planning Director at Heathrow. “This new trial will give passengers that extra added bit of certainty and reassurance ahead of their journey and we think it will be particularly popular for those with families or nervous travelers who may want a bit more confidence in their journeys.”

Here’s what Heathrow’s innovative booking system trial could mean for your next trip through Terminal 3.

Book a Time Slot To Pass Through Security at LHR Terminal 3

If you’re used to the perks of having TSA PreCheck or CLEAR when going through security in the U.S., it can be a real drag when passing through airports abroad without either of these services.

Heathrow Airport has decided it’s about time queues at security were a thing of the past by trialing a free booking system for certain passengers. The trial is expected to last up to 6 months.

What’s more, the trial will be of particular benefit to travelers heading to the U.S. as the 4 airlines included in the trial are American, Delta, Emirates, and Virgin Atlantic.

Hot Tip:

When planning your journey between Heathrow Airport and London, the Heathrow Express can be a great option depending on your final destination and how far in advance you book your ticket.

To book a slot, all you need is your email address and flight details. Once at the airport, follow the signs for the “Heathrow Timeslot” area where you’ll have a 15-minute window before and after your scheduled time. Remember to drop any bags off at the relevant airline counter before proceeding to this area.

It’s hoped that the trial will prove successful so that the booking system can be made permanent and be rolled out across the airport’s 4 terminals.

“We look forward to seeing the data come in to give us some learnings on how we can roll this out more widely across Heathrow,” said Powell.

Final Thoughts

Your next departure from Heathrow could be a lot more streamlined thanks to the introduction of the free time-slot booking system at Terminal 3.

We’re hoping the trial proves successful and that the initiative is rolled out for all airlines across the whole airport!
