After accidentally leaking the information online yesterday and then removing it (remember that there are always receipts!), Iberia has now enacted its new award pricing.

There’s good news and bad news. The bad news is that most prices are going up for Iberia’s flights to the U.S., based on how many Avios you’ll need for a flight. The good news is that those willing to book basic economy may pay less.

This isn’t the first negative change we’ve seen from Iberia and its recently renamed Club Iberia Plus program this year. Here’s what you need to know about the new pricing changes.

Iberia Increases Award Flight Costs in All but Basic Economy

Iberia recently renamed its loyalty program from Iberia Plus to Club Iberia Plus. The airline also thought that it was a great time to overhaul how status is earned with the program, making it harder for nearly everyone. Now, the airline has devalued its award charts, as first noticed by LoyaltyLobby.

The new award charts appeared online yesterday for a short time, though they were later removed. Now, Iberia has implemented the new pricing that was leaked.

Looking at Iberia’s flights to the U.S., here are the old and new prices you’ll pay for award tickets (in Avios):

Across the board, you’ll now pay more for award flights. That’s a real bummer.

The silver lining is reserved for those who book basic economy tickets, as the price went down slightly on many of those fares:

  • Between Madrid and New York or Boston: Decrease from 20,000 to 19,500 Avios (peak) or 17,000 to 16,000 (off-peak)
  • Between Madrid and Chicago or Dallas: Decrease from 25,000 to 24,250 Avios (peak) or 21,250 down to 20,000 (off-peak)
  • Between Madrid and Los Angeles: Decrease from 30,000 to 29,250 Avios (peak) or 25,500 down to 24,000 (off-peak)
Hot Tip:

While these award price increases are disappointing, they’re still competitive among your options for flying to Europe using points and miles.

The new pricing is already live on Iberia’s website.

Final Thoughts

Unfortunately, Club Iberia Plus has raised its award prices on all but basic economy flights — which actually got cheaper between the U.S. and Europe. The new award charts briefly appeared online yesterday and then disappeared, but the pricing hadn’t increased yet.

Now, the new prices are in effect, representing close to a 20% increase on some of our favorite uses of Avios. That’s tough to swallow, even if the prices are still better than what some of Iberia’s competitors charge for award flights.
